Queens' College, Cambridge

Queens' College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge, England. Queens' is one of the oldest and largest colleges of the university, founded in 1448 by Margaret of Anjou (the Queen of Henry VI, who founded King's College), and has some of the most recognisable buildings in Cambridge. The college spans both sides of the river Cam, colloquially referred to as the "light side" and the "dark side", with the world-famous Mathematical Bridge connecting the two.

The college's alumni include heads of government and politicians from various countries, royalty, religious leaders, astronauts and Oscar nominees, its distinguished alumni include Stephen Fry, Abba Eban and T. H. White. Its most famous matriculant is Desiderius Erasmus, who studied at the college during his trips to England between 1506 and 1515.

The college has a financial endowment of £54.9 million

The current President of the college is the senior economist and Labour Party adviser, Lord Eatwell. Past Presidents of the college include Saint John Fisher.

Queens College, City University of New York

Queens College, located in Flushing in the borough of Queens in New York City, is one of the senior colleges of the City University of New York. It is also the fifth-oldest and one of the largest senior colleges of the twenty-three institutions of higher learning of the City University of New York (CUNY). The college's 77-acre campus is located along Kissena Boulevard. Queens College opened in 1937.

History

Before Queens College was established in 1937, the site of the campus was home to the Jamaica Academy, a one-room schoolhouse built in the early 19th century, where Walt Whitman once worked as teacher. The building was located on Flushing-Jamaica Road (later renamed Kissena Boulevard). Jamaica Academy became public in 1844. In 1909, the New York Parental School, a home for troubled boys, opened on the land surrounding the future site of Queens College and incorporated Jamaica Academy on its campus. Buildings such as Jefferson Hall (named after Thomas Jefferson) were used as both dormitories and classrooms.

Queens (Nova Scotia provincial electoral district)

Queens is a former provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed between 1867-2013. It elected one member to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. In its last configuration, the electoral district included the entirety of Queens County.

The electoral district was abolished following the 2012 electoral boundary review and was largely replaced by the new electoral district of Queens-Shelburne.

Queens (New Brunswick provincial electoral district)

Queens was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. It used a bloc voting system to elect candidates. It was abolished with the 1973 electoral redistribution, when the province moved to single-member ridings.

Queens (novel)

Queens is a novel, written in 1984 by an author under the apparent pseudonym "Pickles," which describes gay life in London. The author was Stephen Pickles, who at the time was working as an editor at Quartet Books, the publisher of the novel, with responsibility for its Encounters series.

Style

The novel is written in a variety of styles:third-person, omniscient narrator, overheard dialogue, and epistolary. In many ways the novel reads like journalism as it mentions numerous real-life bars, pubs, and cruising spots, as well as other less anecdotally gay parts of London. Heaven, the Coleherne, and The Bell on Pentonville Road are just three of the main gay locations mentioned in the novel. In some regards, due to the absurdist tone of the novel's overall narration it could be considered to be written in mockumentary style. The omniscient narrator appears to have a pessimistic and ultimately unamused opinion of the characters described which contributes greatly to the novel's comedic value.
