Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a common cause of chronic liver disease, a common finding on liver biopsy in those patients with abnormal blood transaminase levels, and a common cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis in the United States. The prevalence of this disorder is expected to rise with the increase in obesity, and the clinical spectrum can range from simple steatosis (fatty liver) to cirrhosis of the liver. Insulin resistance is thought to be pivotal for the development of steatosis, and oxidative stress may be a potential factor that can promote hepatic necroinflammation and fibrosis. Preliminary studies have examined the role of oxidative stress and antioxidants in animal and human studies of this disorder. Efforts to improve the hepatic antioxidant system could be achieved by optimizing the patient's diet, by supplementation with precursors for antioxidants, or by supplementation with essential metals and/or antioxidants. Randomized, controlled trials are required to exa...

Dominant narratives about LGBT activism in South Asia have been shaped by the pervasive presence of non-governmental organizations (NGOs); these narratives center on working class, trans-feminine people, and men who have sex with men (MSM), both of which are deemed at-risk populations in the fight against HIV/AIDS. These populations are also at risk of blackmail, harassment, and extortion by thugs and potential lovers, and also rape and abuse by partners, sex work clients, and police. LGBT activism in South Asia must be understood as much more than health advocacy, or organized policy work of NGOs that target these populations. Cultural performances, quotidian practices, support groups, and online networks also do the work of critiquing oppressive social systems, validating non-mainstream genders and sexualities, shifting public opinions, distributing relevant legal and medical information, and ensuring the safety of sexual and gender minorities.

According to the preface, Pliny's Natural History belongs to the genre of historia, of which subject is the nature. At the same time, the preface offers other genre classifications as well: encyclios paideia, thaesaurus. Pliny himself points out the novelty of his work: Libros naturalis historiae […] novicium opus (praef. 1.). Regarding Pliny's peculiar concept of nature, in terms of the genre and literary history, Natural History can be interpreted as a borderline case.

This article presents fresh perspectives on challenges monumental editions face in the twenty-first century along with current efforts to address them. It provides a range of viewpoints, approaches, and case studies about the current state of the most emblematic European Monumenta collections and how their editorial boards are imagining and creating a sustainable future for these editorial enterprises that had, and still have, a fundamental role in shaping how we see and understand today the history of the European music.

Through archive documentation, four buildings designed and built as Freemasonic lodges are known in Spain, beside another two planned and never constructed. Of all these, the one for the ‘Logia Añaza’ of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, is the only Egyptianizing one, in contrast with the situation which rules abroad, where this type is very common. The article contextualizes the building in the development of Spanish and, in further detail, Canarian Freemasonry. The vicissitudes of the workshop that erected it and the uses to which the building was put are reported. The long process of its construction is detailed, from the plans and elevations drawn in 1900 by Manuel de Camara, to the inauguration in 1904 with uncoated façade, and the difficulties to finish it. The latter are evident in the absence of documents related to the exact date when the façade was completed, around the 1920s, when the architect had already died, and the doubts concerning the attribution of most of its Egyptian elements absent in the original drawings. Finally, the symbolism of the building, the Masonic initiation, and its facade are analysed: the two columns that refer to those of the Jerusalem temple, the protecting sphinxes, the hybrid lotiform-papyrusform balusters, the sloping door frame, the winged sun disc on the lintel, frieze with alternating palmettes and djed pillars, etc.
A Cultural History of Climate Change, 2016
In A Cultural History of Climate Change (Routledge) Eds. Bristow, T & Ford, T. This chapter investigates the emergence of the Anthropocene by considering some of the dynamics between European cultural values and natural history in early modernity, and their relations with climate change. In particular, it seeks to disentangle the ways in which certain social processes that emerged in the long seventeenth century from 1550-1750 not only exacerbated global climate change, but also provided a robust foundation for ecocriticial responses to the advance of global climate change in the twenty-first century.
