Postcolonial Development, 2024
Because culture is difficult to measure in terms of its importance for development, it is still radically underestimated. It is, however, a key to postcolonial emancipation, ecological sustainability and social integration. Religion has been and continues to be a central dimension in this process, but one that is sometimes highly ambivalent in its impact. Against this background, the following essay sketches perspectives of postcolonial development, taking Nigeria as an example. The focus is on the postulate of integrating indigenous knowledge into development concepts, without which the claim of participatory and holistic development cannot be credibly advocated today.

The related article by Alex David Rogers & Eva Ramirez-Llodra (pp. 10-37) shows how quantitative sampling methods and deep submergence technologies, as well as advances in fields such as acoustics and marine navigation, are enabling deep-sea exploration of marine ecosystems. About the Journal The International Hydrographic Review (IHR) is an international scientific journal publishing peer-reviewed papers on all aspects of hydrography and associated subjects, ranging from the latest technical developments and significant events to book reviews and historical recollections. The IHR was first published in 1923 and since then has been published regularly.

The countries of Central and Eastern Europe and their military capabilities are crucial to the regional resilience system due to their proximity to the Ukrainian theatre of war and these states’ high vulnerability to Russian interference. The industry of the Visegrád countries, with its central position on NATO’s eastern flank and relatively large economic potential, has the potential to play a significant role in the defence of this part of Europe. A well-developed arms industry is also a necessary factor for the V4 countries to be able to pursue a foreign and security policy that is as sovereign as possible.

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and lethal viral disease that causes severe hemorrhagic fever in pigs. It keeps spreading around the world, posing a severe socioeconomic risk and endangering biodiversity and domestic food security. ASF first outbroke in China in 2018, and has spread to most provinces nationwide. Genotypes I and II ASF virus (ASFV) as the etiological pathogens have been found in China. In this study, three pairs of specific primers and probes targeting the ASFV B646L gene, F1055L gene, and E183L gene were designed to detect universal, genotype I, and genotype II strains, respectively. A triplex crystal digital PCR (cdPCR) was established on the basis of optimizing various reaction conditions. The assay demonstrated remarkably sensitive with low limits of detection (LODs) of 5.120, 4.218, 4.588 copies/reaction for B646L, F1055L, and E183L gene, respectively; excellent repeatability with 1.24-2.01% intra-assay coefficients of variation (CVs) and 1.32-2.53% inter-assay CVs; good specificity for only detection of genotypes I and II ASFV, without cross-reactivity with PCV2, PRV, SIV, PRRSV, PEDV, FMDV, and CSFV. The triplex cdPCR was used to test 1,275 clinical samples from Guangxi province of China, and the positivity rates were 5.05, 3.22, and 1.02% for genotype I, genotype II, and co-infection of genotypes I and II, respectively. These 1,275 clinical samples were also detected using a reported reference triplex real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR), and the agreements of detection results between these two methods were more than 98.98%. In conclusion, the developed triplex cdPCR could be used as a rapid, sensitive, and accurate method to detect and differentiate genotypes I and II strains of ASFV.

With increasing levels of digital media consumption, organizational spending on online promotion continues to grow steadily and dynamically. However, in line with this growth in spending, it is clear that the effectiveness of promotional activities in the digital world has decreased. Today, organizations are looking for alternatives to influence consumers in an increasingly complex market. One of the key trends emerging is the adoption of the influencer marketing concept. The purpose of this article is to analyze the role, position and significance of digital influencers in the overall functioning of the online promotion system, as well as the impact of the influencer marketing concept on sustainable development. A literature analysis was conducted to understand the origins of this phenomenon, along with its scale, causes and impact on the functioning of the digital promotion system. After completing this stage, a questionnaire survey was conducted among a group of individual internet users to obtain primary data. The research findings show great potential in activities involving digital influencers. This potential is mainly related to the effective delivery of information regarding products or services, their impact on increasing brand awareness, and their influence on the sales of the company's products and services. This research confirms that digital marketing strategies involving influencers can achieve success, where influencers play a key role in persuading potential buyers through promotions on social media. The findings make a significant contribution to understanding the integration of influencers' roles in digital marketing strategies to achieve increased sales.
This study explores the potential of AI-powered tools to enhance the inclusivity and effectiveness of career fairs, particularly for multicultural attendees in urban settings like Vancouver. Using semi-structured interviews with diverse participants, the research examines how AI can streamline job-seeking processes, personalize recommendations, and address barriers such as language and cultural differences. Findings reveal that while AI improves efficiency-such as reducing overcrowding and providing tailored job-matching-participants expressed significant concerns regarding bias, privacy, and the loss of human interaction. AI's reliance on historical data was seen as a potential source of unfair recommendations, while cultural sensitivity and multilingual capabilities were highlighted as areas of promise. Trust in AI remains contingent on transparency and ethical data use. The study underscores the importance of designing AI systems that balance technological convenience with human oversight and cultural awareness, fostering equitable and engaging career experiences for diverse populations. This research offers critical insights for integrating AI into career guidance while addressing ethical and inclusivity challenges.

Ethnography of communication studies conducted by communication scholars, including those informed by cultural discourse theory, typically approach the cultural transmission of discursive resources using a narrow conception of language socialization. In this conception, expert speakers instruct or otherwise compel novice speakers to speak in locally recognized, normative ways and thereby achieve or affirm membership in the collective. I perform the cultural discourse analysis of narratives of circulation to extend this approach. In particular, I study narratives representing the movements of the Anglo-American speech genre known as public speaking in a US undergraduate course and a series of focus groups. Speakers narrated movement along four paths: from beyond the classroom into the classroom; inside the classroom (with the class acting as primary agent of dissemination); inside the classroom (with student speakers acting as secondary agents of dissemination); and from the classroom beyond the classroom. The analysis suggests three extensions of the existing approach to cultural transmission and, thereby, of cultural discourse theory: accounting for cultural ideologies (or metacultures) of transmission; producing more comprehensive accounts of transmission’s participation structure; and accounting for the local meanings of mobile resources both in context and in motion.
