The law of conservation of energy has to be modified in accordance with the Einstein equations of General Relativity to include space curvature. Then total energy is mass + energy + energy of space curvature. To have a cosmology in which the law of conservation of total energy is applied the total energy of the universe defined in this way must be zero. Then the energy of space curvature is always negative. This cosmology depends on the universe being finite with a space boundary.
