1.1 Introduction
Looking at the society today, there are three major issues pertinent in the education of young men and women. The first is the development of vision for one’s life. Most student have a vision or the other for life. Although a times this vision maybe chosen consciously or unconsciously and it is this vision that sought after in life. The second issue in the education of young men and women is the development of character. That is education aims at developing character which in turns motivates their zeal to achieve their vision in life. This can be seen in most institution where it is inscribed boldly that ‘certificate is awarded based on ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE and CHARACTER.’ Thirdly is the development of competence that deals with concerns of how well one is able to achieve a task.
Walsh defines education as the process that prepares young people for their social inheritance. He also propounded three dimensions of education which are:-
Development of mental abilities
Training of mental abilities
Development of character
Generally speaking, character either good or bad, is considered to be observable in one’s conduct and that is why the Yoruba’s do say “efin ni iwa, ko se fi pa mo” that is every man’s character can be compared to smoke which cannot be hidden.
However, there is a need to make a clear cut between character and values. Character is the in-built and unconscious being of a man. While values are orientations or dispositions. Values are seen as one of the foundations for character formation. Hence, the need to instill the right values into the life of the young men and women in order to form the right character which will be acceptable to the society. And in order to achieve the instilling of right values and morals into the younger generation, Religious Education has a lot of role to play. However in this research work, Christian Education shall be our focus.

There is no doubt that the major challenge facing the 21st century generation is the moral decadence which has encroached into all sector of the economy. In Nigeria for instance, corruption which at one time was a criminal offence has now become the norm of the day. Likewise, virginity which was being kept and guard jealously formerly by young girls is now seen as being uncivilized young girls now fried themselves in number of men they have had sexual intercourse with. It now seems that no one cares about the moral life of the young ones. Then can we say that the lack or ineffective of Christian Education in our Secondary Schools is the cause of this? Or rather is it the influx of technological advancement? Or can the problem be blamed on the government?
