Many schools are beginning to implement multi-tier response to intervention (RTI) models for the prevention of reading difficulties and to assist in the identification of students with learning disabilities (LD). The present study was part of our larger ongoing longitudinal RTI investigation within the Florida Learning Disabilities Center grant. This study used a longitudinal correlational design, conducted in 7 ethnically and socio-economically diverse schools. We observed reading instruction in 20 classrooms, examined response rates to kindergarten Tier 1 instruction, and predicted students' first grade reading performance based upon kindergarten growth and end of year reading performance (n = 203). Teachers followed an explicit core reading program and overall, classroom instruction was rated as effective. Results indicate that controlling for students' end of kindergarten reading, their growth across kindergarten on a variety of language and literacy measures suppressed predictions of first grade performance. Specifically, the steeper the students' trajectory to a satisfactory outcome, the less likely they were to demonstrate good performance in first grade. Implications for future research and RTI implementation are discussed.

Background and Aim: Out of all global microbial pathogens, 61% are zoonoses. Zoonotic diseases (Z/D/S) are responsible for a large burden on the public health, livestock economies, and wildlife of India. Data on burden and knowledge about Z/D/S among animal handlers are limited for urban and peri-urban areas of India. The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-reported selected Z/D/S and knowledge about those diseases among animal handlers in the urban area of Ahmedabad city, India. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 170 animal handlers from three zones of Ahmedabad city, India, from February to May 2017. Data were collected on sociodemographic, different exposure, knowledge, practices about animal handling, and self-reported Z/D/S condition. Results: Majority of study participants were females. Participants had numbers of animals, and it ranged from 1 to 70. However, the majority of them were cattle. Average experience and hours/day spent for handling animal were reported 22±15 years and 5±2 h, respectively. From all participants, about one-third perceived that handling animal could be a cause of disease. Average knowledge on the mode of transmission of Z/D/S was found 4.1%. Most common high risk and preventive practices found consumption of raw milk (72%) and handwashing (83%). The proportion of self-reported Z/D/S in the past 5 years was found to be 23% among respondents and 17% among family members. However, the proportion of existing self-reported Z/D/S or symptomatic Z/D/S was 17% among respondents and 18% among family members. Most common self-reported Z/D/S were vector-borne, animal bite, and respiratory disorders. Conclusion: The knowledge and prevalence of Z/D/S were found low as compared to other studies from India. Further awareness and screening of animal handlers can be useful to increase the reporting and prevention and control of Z/D/S among them.
In most developing countries around the world, construction projects are carried out on a daily basis, using diverse means of contracting. One of such means is the process of subcontracting which is gaining popularity as a result of specialization among construction participants. This research therefore assessed the use of various subcontracting options for construction project delivery. Using a survey design, 43 registered construction firms were sampled using census sampling techniques. Data gathered were analyzed using percentage, frequency and mean item score. Findings showed that nominated and domestic subcontracting options are the mostly used subcontracting options. Planned construction time, time to implement variation order and time taken to rectify defects are the major time related factors capable of causing poor project delivery, while contractor’s expected profit, contractor’s cash flow and the cost of materials and equipment are the major cost related factors capable of causing poor project delivery if not properly evaluated by the parties involved. The study further recommends that the level of awareness and usage of the other subcontracting options which are not widely known and used presently can be improved through seminars, meetings, conferences organized by construction professional’s supervisory bodies and relative agencies for construction stakeholders. Also effective monitoring and coordination of the activities of subcontractors by the main contractor is necessary so that the outline programme of works can be achieved on time and within budget.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether intervention efforts initiated in Jasper County, Missouri since the 1991 Jasper County, Missouri Superfund Site Lead and Cadmium Study have been effective in reducing the mean blood lead levels of children residing in the area. The mean blood lead levels for the 1991 study was 6.24 ± 4.86 µg/dl and for the 2000 study was 3.82 ± 2.29 µg/dl in children living in the same geographical area as the 1991 study. Blood lead levels declined on average by 2.42 µg/dl between 1991 and 2000. The proportion of children with blood lead levels greater than or equal to 10 µg/dl in the 1991 study was 14% and in children living in the same area as the 1991 study was 2% in the 2000 study. The results of this study indicated that educational and environmental interventions initiated since 1991 to reduce blood lead levels of children living in the mining waste and smelter area of Jasper County, Missouri have been effective. Only two percent of the childr...

The provincial natural reservation called Auca Mahuida (Neuquén, Argentina) is an area of interest for conservation due to its flora and endemic species richness. New ecological rehabilitation projects are being developed there. The objective of this work was to assess the re-introduction of two indigenous species belonging to different functional groups in abandoned quarries: a nitrogen-fixing shrub Senna arnottiana, and a grass species Stipa speciosa var. speciosa. Four treatments were applied: S. arnottiana associated to S. speciosa with 1 (one) liter of hydrogel, S. arnottiana associated to S. speciosa with 1.5 (one and a half) liters of hydrogel, S. arnottiana isolated with 1 (one) liter of hydrogel, and S. arnottiana isolated with 1.5 (one and a half) liters of hydrogel. One year after the planting, the S. arnottiana grow and survival were assessed. Results showed a high species survival rate (84.75%, on average), and no significant differences among treatments. Regarding the species growth, results varied among the four treatments. It was concluded that S. arnottiana canbe introduced as a facilitator species for natural continuity on degraded arid environments. Further follow-up will make it possible to know whether the benefits of simultaneous speciesintroduction remain on advanced phases, and to evaluate which treatment is better for the development of reproductive structures and/or an immediate soil coverage.
