ABSTRACT: Our study is meant to point out the main methodology used by authors in creating the English-Romanian/Romanian-English legal dictionaries/glossaries which exist on the book market in our country. The research worker who is interested in studying the content and structure of such dictionaries immediately notices the small number of these books on the Romanian market in comparison with, for example, the economic ones. At the same time, the research workers and also the users of legal dictionaries quite easily identify the frequent scarcity and the simple structure of the entries included by lexicographers. Our study will analyze the criteria used by the authors of these dictionaries for selecting the terms included in their books, as well as the structure of the selected entries (phonetic script, contextualization, identification of uncountable/countable nouns, indication of special plural forms, such as the foreign plural, references made to synonyms for disambiguation etc....

Dictionaries that provide help in communicative and cognitive situations are important information tools in today’s society, in particular when two different languages and legal systems are involved. Researchers at Centre for Lexicography, Aarhus University, Denmark, have been involved in theoretical and practical lexicographic work related to the field of law since the late 1980s, so this work is a significant part of the Centre’s output throughout the years. Researchers connected with the Centre in various ways have published several print dictionaries: an English-Danish dictionary of law, a Spanish-Danish dictionary of law, a German-Danish dictionary of law, and a DanishGerman dictionary of law. In addition, one online Danish-English law dictionary has been made available and the English-Danish dictionary mentioned above is now only available as a revised and updated online dictionary. The theoretical work on legal lexicography has centred on developing principles for an English-...

Legal English is difficult for at least two different reasons. One is that it involves many technical terms that are complex and often archaic. Another reason, perhaps less widely recognised, is that seemingly simple non-technical terms can carry technical meanings in legal contexts. As for the first difficulty, one can refer to specialist legal dictionaries. Regarding the second difficulty, however, neither general English dictionaries nor specialist legal dictionaries seem to provide sufficient information. Legal dictionaries typically do not contain elaborate entries for non-technical terms. General English dictionaries can usually only spare a small space near the bottom of the entry for the technical usage of any given term. This is not a happy situation, especially considering that such nontechnical words are often placed in crucial positions within sentences to

As a consequence of the still increasing transnational commercial and scholarly cooperation and exchange, more and more often legal information has to be translated. Sometimes the content of legal documents (contracts, statutory provisions, books and articles on legal topics and so on) has to be translated into another language. But even more frequently, information on rules from one legal system has to be provided in the legal language of another legal system. In both cases the translator or the lawyer involved is confronted with difficulties of legal translation. In both cases bilingual legal dictionaries could play an important role in the translating process by providing translation suggestions and information on the linguistic context of terms in the target language, such as specific noun-verb combinations, or typical collocations.
