ABSTRACT In most common definition a bilingual is a person who is able to speak and understand two languages. Most of us consider bilingualism as something good, an advantage. For one thing, knowledge of another language enables people to communicate with members of other cultures in their own language. This, in turn, provides a means for furthering cooperation and understanding among nations and peoples. Then rise some questions considering bilingualism such as: Is it a good idea to become a bilingual? Just what is a bilingual? Should a young child learn a second language? When should that be? How might learning a second language be affected by the first? These are questions which people and scientists commonly raise. This literature-based article will attempt to provide answers that offer some insight into these questions and other issues related to bilingualism

Bilingualism is the case which occurs when an individual can communicate in two languages. A bilingual person can fully or partially comprehend the messages transmitted in two separate languages. Nowadays, as an inevitable consequence of a very high rate of migration, common implementation of international trades, international tourism events and a diversity of education programs, people are required to be able to communicate in at least two languages together with their mother tongue. Bilingualism plays an important role in today's world because of globalization. As it is related to individuals and languages, it requires detailed investigation in individual, societal, political, cultural, historical, scientific and global level. Considering the importance of the situation, this study focuses on the definition, causes, types, dimensions, outcomes and taxonomy of bilingualism as well as examples across the globe and Turkey. It aims to connect the bilingualism to the changes in people and society, too. It also provides implications of bilingualism in educational context.
Bilingualism basically defined as having been brought up with two languages and being more or less equally competent in using both languages is a significant phenomenon in this information era requiring frequent access and communication among people. This study aims to identify the bilingualism phenomenon focusing on some of its components. First of all though it is not easy to make clear cut definitions regarding the term bilingualism, what the term stands for and which basic constellations can be associated with this term will be explained in the study in a detailed way. This article contains bilingualism and its importance in human life, as well as the benefits of bilingualism for children, skills, and recommendations for identifying their ability to be bilingual or to develop their language skills. Thus, children have the ability to accept external stimuli, creating them to form their thoughts in order to recognize similar sounds which together form words and phrases that allow them to easily express thoughts and feelings over the years.
Bilingualism is one of the important issues in the field of sociology of language which is dealt with by most linguists, sociologists and policy makers. Bilingualism is a reality that is occurred in most countries at it comprises a state which a person is trained other than his native language. The spread of globalization and in increasing global interdependence and mass communication often requires the ability to function in more than one language. Bilingualism, whether in civilized or in traditional form, raised issues for educational system which a scrutinized and comprehensive study is requires to be responded to. The advocates of educating bilingualism believe that literacy in the local language must be occurred before learning a second language. They think it makes children become literate in basic subjects in the own language and they should learn their native language before being taught in English.

Semiotics & Visual Communication ΙΙΙ: Cultures of Branding, 2019
Semiotics is usually used to decode, whether it is images, words, or concepts. However, this research through practice explores how to 'encode,' and specifically encoding visual messaging using semiotics, by appropriating the theories used in semiotics and applying them to 'advertising tools and techniques' to encode branded messaging. Some of the thoughts from the following theorists are applied to the tools and techniques used in advertising: Roland Barthes and his views on popular culture; Kress and Van Leeuwens's theories on the grammar of visual design; Canadian Marcel Danesi's semiotic interpretation of advertising and branding, along with Stuart Hall's observations on encoding/decoding, and Eco's perspective on sign production. This case study deals with a personal brand named El Crayolas that was created and encoded from 2013 to 2015 in Mexico City. For this case study, the personal brand was encoded using both digital and analogue methods. El Crayolas was encoded using specific signs, codes, and emergent codes which were placed into various visual communications. This branding was broadcast as content on: social media, exhibited through contemporary art practice, and broadcast on advertising billboards. This 'research through practice' presents the process used to 'encode' using signs, codes and emergent codes to create a personal brand named El Crayolas, and asks the question 'Can semiotics be used to encode a personal brand by appropriating advertising tools and techniques? ' The case study also explores the concept that designers can be empowered to create more effective design if they apply semiotic theory to encode their design projects.
