Institutional Change for Museums: A Practice Guide to Creating Polyvocal Spaces, eds. Kantara Souffrant and Marianna Pegno, 2024

This essay examines the ethical questions that arise with collections and public displays of African and African Diasporic sacred arts in art museums and ethnographic museums. Highlighting several case studies, I consider the successes and challenges of exhibitions featuring Haitian and Congolese sacred vessels (pakèt kongo and minkisi). While certain artifacts have long histories of public display and museum ownership, others are just beginning to receive scholarly attention for their key roles as ceremonial arts or everyday ritual arts. I problematize the concept of religious “secrets,” underscoring the Western fixation on obtaining access to and exploiting indigenous knowledge, which has been especially evident in the colonial and neo-colonial Africana art market. Even in recognizing the educational value of museum exhibitions, ultimately, we must learn to implement an ethics of sacred arts when handling ritual implements of the gods, which host and embody the spirits themselves.

The central aim of this paper is to draw attention to the role played by transhumance, or booleying, in 19th and 20th century Irish farming. Transhumance involves the seasonal movement of people and their livestock from one grazing ground to another and has been practised across the world ever since food-producing animals were first domesticated (Hole 1996). It is a system which varies greatly from region to region, but in Ireland it is usually characterised by the movement of dairy cows from lowland to upland for the summer months. The remains of the summer dwellings, or booley huts, of the cattle herders survive in large numbers on Irish mountain-sides but they have been largely neglected by Irish archaeologists to date bar two brief periods of interest in the 1940s and 1980s. Thankfully however, a good deal of folk information on the system was collected in the first half of the 20th century, before it died out completely. This paper examines what these sources can tell us and presents the results of recent archaeological fieldwork in the Galtee Mountains. Furthermore, indirect evidence is used to support views that 19th and 20th century transhumance is a survival of a practice which was much more widespread and important to Irish agriculture in previous centuries.

Earned value analysis is a method of performance measurement. Many project managers manage their project performance by comparing planned to actual results. With this method, one could easily be on time but overspend according to the plan. A better method is earned value because it integrates cost, schedule and scope and can be used to forecast future performance and project completion dates. It is an “early warning” program/project management tool that enables managers to identify and control problems before they become insurmountable. It allows projects to be managed better – on time, on budget.

La presente investigación se enfoca desde el punto de vista temporal, en la transición entre el denominado Periodo Intermedio Tardío (1100-1400 d.C.) y el posterior Horizonte Tardío (1400 – 1532 d.C.) en la región noreste de la Cuenca del Lago Titicaca. Se hará énfasis en la en la región de valles inter - montañosa de la Cordillera Oriental. Debido a la necesidad de visibilizar la zona en términos arqueológicos se cuestionan temáticas tales como la identidad, filiación cultural, estrategias de poder y política Incaica. Pues al tratar con la transición de un sistema socio-cultural a otro, este permite visibilizar la transición en un sentido de evaluación único.

This paper explores the hard question of the appropriation in construction of a public space, asking the question of gradual phenomenology of an atmosphere. We seek to show how some ways and forms of appropriation by the use contribute to the progressive and specifical building of an atmosphere. That’s why our attention was focused on children playing in a public space
