The population growth of dar es salaam city is the average annual percent change in the population, resulting from a surplus (or deficit) of births over deaths and the balance of migrants entering and leaving the Dar es Salaam city. The rate may be positive or negative. The growth rate is a factor in determining how great a burden would be imposed on Dar es Salaam by the changing needs of its people for infrastructure (e.g., schools, hospitals, housing, roads), resources (e.g., food, water, electricity), and jobs. According to the area national census, the region had a population of 4,364,541, which was much higher than the pre-census projection of 2002. The regions 5.6 percent average annual population growth rate was the highest in the country. it was also the most densely populated region with 3,133 people per square kilometer. The most common form of transport in Dar es salaam are the public buses, called dala dala, which are often found at the major bus terminals of mwenge, ubungo mbagala as well kariakoo. The city also hosts transportation to various places on motorcycles and bajaj. The growth area of Dar es Salaam city has increased due to the growth rate of population which precipitates to the expansion of Dar es Salaam city to other nearby region like bagamoyo, pwani and morogoro. The existing infrastructure of Dar es Salaam city like housing, schools, hospitals, roads facing challenges due to the rapid increase of population. The infrastructure does not fulfill the demand of the population.
