Soft computing: Fuzzy Models and Applications Ivan Popchev Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Abstract: The paper attempts to give protection of soft computing in the investigations of the scientist form the institutes of Informatics, Information technologies and Information and Communications Technologies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Presented is a short list of 60 publications on Soft Computing. Key words: Berkeley Initiative of Soft computing, Soft computing, fuzzy models, artificial intelligence. 1. Introduction Lotfi A. Zadeh in many of his studies and writings (http://www.cs.barkely.edu/-zadeh) introduces the idea of Soft computing as an example of a new kind of artificial intelligence. In a paper published in 1981, “Possibility Theory of Soft Data analysis” L. Zadeh employed the term “soft data analysis” to described data that are partly probabilistic and partly possibilistic. Ten years later, in 1991 the Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing (BISC) was launched. This initiative was motivated by the fact that in science, as in other realms, there is a tendency to be nationalistic – to commit oneself to particular methodology and employ it as if it were a universal tool. The essence of soft computing in that, unlike the traditional, hard computing, it is aimed at an accommodation with the pervasive imprecision of the real world. Thus, the principle of soft computing is: “… exploit the tolerance for imprecision and partial truth to achieve tractability, robustness, low solution cost and letter rapport with reality”. In the final analysis, the role model for soft computing is the human mind. Lotfi A. Zadeh determined that soft computing is not a single methodology. Rather, it is a partnership. The principal partners at this juncture are fuzzy logic, neuro-computing and probabilistic reasoning, with the latter subsuming genetic algorithms, chaotic systems, belief networks and parts of learning theory. Moreover, Lotfi A. Zadeh wrote in the following periods that in coming years, the ubiquity of intelligent systems is certain to have a profound impact on the ways in which man-made intelligent systems are conceived, designed, manufactured, employed and interacted with. With the development since 1991, the Berkeley Initiative of Soft Computing, the guiding principle and the principal partners of soft computing have found evidence not only in academic research but also in a wide range of practically useful solutions for people and society in many countries. Noting in these few lines only one aspect of Lotfi Zadeh's work it must be emphasized his enormous contribution to Bulgarian and world science. Deservedly Prof. Lotfi Aliasker Zadeh since 2005 is foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. 2. Soft Computing in development In the departments of "Soft Computing" and "Intelligent Systems" of the Institutes of Informatics, Information Technologies and Information and Communication Technologies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in the period 1991 - 2019 under European programs and contracts, between academic and national projects with the National Science Fund and Innovation Fund, in collaboration with teams of researchers from the Plovdiv University “Paisiy Hilendarski” and Burgas Free University, institutes and companies have designed new methods, models and software tools that have been developed and widely used. These results, a product of the efforts of many teams of scientists, have proved the claim of L. A. Zadeh for Soft computing as an example of a new kind of artificial intelligence. In recent three decades, selected publications have emerged from numerous contracts and projects and have found acceptance on the pages of: A. Journals: A1. Fuzzy Sets and Systems (1993, 1998, 2003).
