2021, Mindfulness
Stand-alone self-compassion or mindful self-compassion, presented independently from the cultivation of other-oriented compassion, has recently emerged as a specific field of secular training and research. Its purported Buddhist background has so far received limited attention in academic scholarship. This article surveys Buddhist precedents—or lack thereof—to the contemporary emergence of this notion. In view of the yet to be established presence of an altruistic component as a psychological corollary of self-compassion, an analysis of the Buddhist sources may offer insights relevant for facilitating future research on the self-other relationship in self-kindness (or self-benevolence) and self-compassion constructs and on altruistic aspects as correlates of self-compassion.

'Of all the teachings, the ultimate is Emptiness, of which compassion is the very essence. It is like a very powerful medicine, a panacea that can cure every disease in the world. And just like that very powerful medicine, the realization of the truth of Emptiness, the nature of reality, is the remedy for all the different negative emotions.' Atiśa Dipankara Shrijnana (980-1054 CE) Compassion (karunā) is as important an aspect of the Path as Wisdom. The Buddha often spoke of compassion in understanding that there is suffering and doing what will best help to alleviate that suffering as the most beneficial and moral of all behaviors. Knowing that there is dukkha is the strongest incentive for living a life of compassionate behavior toward ourselves as well as toward others. Compassion for ourselves and compassion for others are not mutually exclusive. As we advance on the Path to Enlightenment by progressively developing purified mental dispositions and behaviors, we gain insight into the subjectivity of our identity and how we confound our understanding of the world through the misconception of an inherent dualistic reality. As we become less enchanted and fascinated with our 'I' and we begin to detach from our cravings and identifications, we develop both wisdom and compassion. Like two wings that work together in flight, each of these qualities supports the other. Wisdom distinguishes beneficial from non-beneficial, while compassion moves us to action. This short article explores a Buddha Inspired Psychology with the integration of several Main themes of the Buddha's teachings with modern psychological perspectives.
Buddhism is often considered as a path for purification vissudhimagga. During an era of empire building and extreme asceticism, it advocated a middle path based on moral perfection. Compassion in Buddhism enjoys an exalted position and its embodiment, Bodhisattva is highly venerated. This concept finds its applicability more in the contemporary era of materialistic race and political chaos, degrading social norms and decaying moral values. This paper is an attempt to analyze the possibility of compassion as a tool to restore peace and prosperity in the contemporary world.
