In 1997, leading choreographer Janet Smith folded her innovative and well-respected company Janet Smith & Dancers, and took up the Artistic Directorship of Scottish Dance Theatre. It was a pivotal moment in her career. Based on interviews between Janet Smith and Jo Butterworth recorded at Bretton Hall College, Wakefield, this article reviews Smith's career to date, her thoughts on the folding of Janet Smith & Dancers, and her hopes and intentions for contemporary dance in the future.
