This paper aims at describing the building of the online corpora on Philippine languages as part of the online repository system called Palito. There are five components of the corpora: the top four major Philippine languages which are Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano and Hiligaynon and the Filipino Sign Language (FSL). The four languages are composed of 250,000-word written texts each, whereas the FSL is composed of seven thousand signs in video format. Categories of the written texts include creative writing (such as novels and stories) and religious texts (such as the Bible). Automated tools are provided for language analysis such as word count, collocates, and others. This is part of a bigger corpora building project for Philippine languages that would consider text, speech and video forms, and the corresponding development of automated tools for language analysis of these various forms.

This paper details the design and implementation of a system that automatically builds text corpora for Filipino and English languages, intended for use as training, development and test sets of a Filipino-English Statistical MachineTranslation (SMT) system. The developed SMT is based on the Moses SMT system. This work presumes that a larger data set of well-formed sentences would lead to a better model of any written language; hence, existing Filipino-English text corpora on hand used for training the SMT system were significantly made larger. Textual language data were mined from the World Wide Web (WWW) using a query-based scheme via the use of the Yahoo! search engine using Odds-Ratio for search term selection, as suggested by Ghani et al. in [2]. Initial monolingual and bilingual linguistic data were collected from various sources, such as the University of the Philippines – Sentro ng Wikang Filipino (UP-SWF), the De La Salle University – Center for Language Technologies (CeLT), and Adarna Publishing House. The corpora collection efforts resulted in a Filipino Monolingual Corpora of 9.104 Million words, and a Filipino-English Bilingual Corpora of 14.6K pairs of sentences with around 580.2K words. The SMT system trained using these corpora scored 29.24 in the BLEU metric

Abstract. This paper describes efforts to develop an online repository of Indonesian corpora–and its associated functions and services–that has been designed to support a wide variety of use cases and applications. Two design considerations are ensuring sustainability and accessibility of the corpora, and enabling open enrichment through annotation. The presented model supports OLAC-compliant metadata, is built atop an OAIS-compliant core repository, and exposes data and functionality via RESTful web services.

This article explores unions between elite Muslim men and elite non-Muslim women from the conquered populations during the seventh to ninth centuries CE. It considers cases from a range of geographic settings, including the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa, the Fertile Crescent, and Iran. It examines these unions in their immediate historical contexts as well as literary artifacts of much later periods. With respect to the former, it argues Muslim conquerors often used elite non-Muslim women to cement their alliances with indigenous elites and as instruments to humiliate and abase these elites. With respect to the latter, it argues that stories of aristocratic non-Muslim women constitute a neglected but important feature of conquest narratives and they show how elite non-Muslim lineage remained prized among Muslims long after the conquests were over. Finally, as the article argues, the phenomenon demonstrates that many in early Muslim society considered maternal lineage to be very important, even if social standing was technically based mainly on the father.
