We live in a society where market values spread without limit, in which we are branding and selling ourselves along with everything else, including public office. How do we stop it?

The concept of consumer citizenship evolved in a period of economic growth and unsustainable consumption. The financial crisis has changed the context radically, creating a wider range of consumer circumstances. The globalized economy rests on an unlimited growth paradigm, despite warnings about unsustainability. Maintaining growth has meant living beyond available means, accumulating debt at governmental, corporate and individual consumer levels. The banking system collapsed from loss of confidence in debt repayment, producing recession and undercutting consumption. The system has accumulated excessive financial, social and environmental debt. Today consumer education must address different classes of consumers: those who can still afford the consumer society, ethically challenged by their
A critical review of Nestor Garcia Canclini's book, Consumers and Citizens: Globalization and Multicultural Conflicts.
In this paper we critique how consumerism is considered an antithesis of citizenship, how acting as a consumer and acting in a civic manner are often viewed as detached parts of our lives. We seek to do this by exploring the blurring of consumerism and citizenship, which is culminating in an emerging area of politicised consumption based on citizenly rights, obligations and social inclusion together with competition and autonomous choice. We illustrate this emergence with specific reference to 'green' citizen consumers to demonstrate the changing face of civic society in the west, where shopping can act as a vector for civic values and hence facilitates the emergence of civic consumer culture in contemporary western society.

This essay speaks to the fact that the United States is a consumptive society, as we are dependent on producers to provide the goods and services necessary to maintain our daily living requirements. It addresses a correlation between historical policies and presents events and practices that continue to undermine public policies that benefit the consumer. Most importantly, the role of government is to provide health and safety for the population and protect it from a corrupt political system that places us at risk for the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe. Mike Leibovich in his book "This Town" refers to Washington DC as the "Gilded Capital," because in his view there is an incestuous relationship among the law firms, politicians, media, and lobbying firms whose agendas are not often in the public's interest. We will examine in detail three areas-food, health care, and the counterfeiting of goods-that are of paramount interest to the nation and examples of the point of the essay.
Media and the Restyling of Politics: Consumerism, Celebrity and Cynicism
This article develops the notion of sustainable citizenship, investigates the kinds of citizenship practices that emerge from and in the market and theorizes how the roles of citizen and consumer are increasingly forged together. It uses survey data to investigate the importance of everyday “ordinary consumption” of common commodities for understanding citizenship and maps the practice and rise of political consumerism, across different age groups in different nations as an inkling of how sustainable citizenship is unfolding in Western society. Sweden is given special emphasis. Important findings are high levels of “buycotting” political consumerism and the fact that political consumers stand out on all identified citizenship expectations but particularly on solidarity citizenship. The concluding section discusses more generally the consumer turn in citizenship and how and why it can be seen as evolving into a more stable or regular practice or habit.

The level of interest in sustainability, amongst the general public and within the media, is growing week by week, giving rise to initiatives from numerous stakeholders, public and private, to inform, educate and facilitate behaviour change at the level of individual households – customers and final consumers. In this paper we argue that in order to achieve this behavioural change, the
