This paper describes an automatic discourse relation alignment experiment as an empirical justification of the planned annotation projection approach to enlarge the 3600-word multilingual corpus of TED Multilingual Discourse Bank (TED-MDB). The experiment is carried out on a single language pair (English-Turkish) included in TED-MDB. The paper first describes the creation of a large corpus of English-Turkish bi-sentences, then it presents a sense-based experiment that automatically aligns the relations in the English sentences of TED-MDB with the Turkish sentences. The results are very close to the results obtained from an earlier semi-automatic post-annotation alignment experiment validated by human annotators and are encouraging for future annotation projection tasks.

We introduce TED-Multilingual Discourse Bank, a corpus of TED talks transcripts in 6 languages (English, German, Polish, European Portuguese, Russian and Turkish), where the ultimate aim is to provide a clearly described level of discourse structure and semantics in multiple languages. The corpus is manually annotated following the goals and principles of PDTB, involving explicit and implicit discourse connectives, entity relations, alternative lexicalizations and no relations. In the corpus, we also aim to capture the characteristics of spoken language that exist in the transcripts and adapt the PDTB scheme according to our aims; for example, we introduce hypophora. We spot other aspects of spoken discourse such as the discourse marker use of connectives to keep them distinct from their discourse connective use. TED-MDB is, to the best of our knowledge, one of the few multilingual discourse treebanks and is hoped to be a source of parallel data for contrastive linguistic analysis a...

The PDTB Annotator is a tool for annotating and adjudicating discourse relations based on the annotation framework of the Penn Discourse TreeBank (PDTB). This demo describes the benefits of using the PDTB Annotator, gives an overview of the PDTB Framework and discusses the tool’s features, setup requirements and how it can also be used for adjudication.

Discourse-annotated corpora are an important resource for the community, but they are often annotated according to different frameworks. This makes comparison of the annotations difficult, thereby also preventing researchers from searching the corpora in a unified way, or using all annotated data jointly to train computational systems. Several theoretical proposals have recently been made for mapping the relational labels of different frameworks to each other, but these proposals have so far not been validated against existing annotations. The two largest discourse relation annotated resources, the Penn Discourse Treebank and the Rhetorical Structure Theory Discourse Treebank, have however been annotated on the same text, allowing for a direct comparison of the annotation layers. We propose a method for automatically aligning the discourse segments, and then evaluate existing mapping proposals by comparing the empirically observed against the proposed mappings. Our analysis highligh...

Zeyrek, D., Demirşahin, I., Sevdik-Çallı, A., Balaban, H. Ö., Yalçınkaya, İ., Turan, Ü. D. (2010). The Annotation Scheme of the Turkish Discourse Bank and an Evaluation of Inconsistent Annotations. In Proceedings of the ACL 2010. LAW IV. The Fourth Linguistic Annotation Workshop. In this paper, we report on the annotation procedures we developed for annotating the Turkish Discourse Bank (TDB), an effort that extends the Penn Discourse Tree Bank (PDTB) annotation style by using it for annotating Turkish discourse. After a brief introduction to the TDB, we describe the annotation cycle and the annotation scheme we developed, defining which parts of the scheme are an extension of the PDTB and which parts are different. We provide inter-coder reliability calculations on the first and second arguments of some connectives and discuss the most important sources of disagreement among annotators.
Introduction: The initial case of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), triggered by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was identified in December 2019. The disease swiftly spread, infecting millions globally and significantly challanged healthcare systems. As per the World Health Organization, approximately 5% of COVID-19 patients who were severely or critically ill require intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the treatment outcomes of critically ill COVID-19-positive patients admitted at ICU in a COVID-19 referral hospital.

In the era of AI, the author's possibilities are limitless, imbuing the future of cinema with an intensity only found in the Dionysian festivities of ancient Greece. As architects of their cinematic universe, authors embody artistic autonomy, shaping a new era of films that only bore the soulless or ignorant. The only condition, dear student, is that you discard everything that the film bureaucracy has taught you. As the ancients used to say: "Monere, non punire, ignoratian decet." It is not convenient to punish, but to advise ignorance. 12 Freed from the restrictions of scriptwriting academic bureaucracy and investors, true censors of each film, authors will finally be able to expose their sensitive vision of the world. Through chapters that synthesize my teaching experience in film on five continents, this book starts from a gnoseological analysis of aesthetics and perception, celebrating the metaphysical potential of cinema, the other face of Janus, that of dreams, intuitions, eternity. We honour visionary pioneers who built cinematic storytelling, Truffaut and Hitchcock, their innovation in an era that was testing the possibilities of this new art. Here, cinema reigns as the supreme art, capable of delivering a mirror to the world, its synthesis, whether it be worse than reality (comedy), just as it is in reality (drama, documentary), and as it should be (tragedy with a happy ending). As we enter a new cinematic era, let us embrace change, guided by the unlimited horizons that only genuine artists deliver.
