Art and Kitsch

Questo saggio intende esplorare l’impatto dei media digitali sulla comprensione del kitsch e sulla sua relazione con l’arte attraverso il concetto di “kitsch digitale”. Il kitsch digitale è qui inteso come la forma predominante della creatività nei media digitali: una creatività democratizzata ma spesso superficiale, caratterizzata da strumenti che facilitano l’alfabetizzazione visiva ma riducono le strategie d’avanguardia a cliché accessibili e riproducibili. Questo fenomeno comprende una vasta gamma di espressioni, dalle creazioni amatoriali online alla produzione professionale, dalle immagini a bassa risoluzione alla CGI, dagli ambienti virtuali alla grafica generata dall’intelligenza artificiale. Se il kitsch rappresenta un prodotto tipico della modernità, il kitsch digitale incarna l’estetica dominante dell’era postmoderna e postdigitale.

چند سال است که از نگارش «چشم هایش» بزرگ علوی گذشته است؟ و چند وقت است که دیگر آن عاشق دل خسته مجنون صفت که به قول شاعر «یک روز معشوق چنانش کاشت که اکنون درختی شده است برگ و برش همه سرخ» با آن لباس سرخش بر سر خیابان لاله زار حاضر نمی شود؟ و کسی چه می داند که بالاخره آن جوان نگون بخت جلد قلم ساز بوف کور تا پیش از آنکه مبدل به پیرمرد خنزر پنزری شود، چند جلد قلم را در هوای «چشم هایش» قلم زد؟ زمانه یکی یکی اسطوره هایش را از ما پس می گیرد و نسل ما تا به خودش بجنبد می بیند که آنقدر عمر گرانمایه را در «چگونه گفتن» صرف کرده که دیگر «چه گفتن» بالکل فراموشش شده است!؟ برای نسل جدید که همه چیز جلوی چشم هایش از سبک های هنری گرفته تا مدل های ماشین و مد لباس و زیبایی چهره و... به یک باره خود زیبایی در حال عوض شدن هستند بدیهی است که گیر دادن به «چشم هایش» به معنای عقب افتادن از قافله است در حالی که برای نسل قبل یک لحظه دیدن چشم هایش می توانست به معنای خطر کردن و عاشقی باشد و البته در هر خطر کردنی رستگاری هم هست و برای ما دون ژوان های امروزی که از تر شدن پاهایمان در استخر محبت هم هراس داریم بسیار سخت است که مفهوم غرق شدن در غرقاب مهیب عشق و تاخت زدن یک عمر را با یک لحظه دیدار «چشم هایش» که قادرند عقربه های تمامی ساعت های عالم را بخار کنند بفهمیم و لذا از هول ولوله پر ز نهیب عاشقی و لازمانی اساطیری اش به تیک و تاک ساعت پناه برده ایم و ترسو وار از آبکی بودن سبک ها و تکرار های رمانتیکی داد سخن می دهیم.
اما هنوز هم برای همه شما این امکان هست که یک روز در اوج یاس و ناامیدی با «چشم هایش» روبه رو شوید. در این صورت خواهش می کنم برای لحظاتی فراموش کنید که دانشجوی هنر های تجسمی هستید و در این ایام که نزدیک عید است و آغاز بهار، یک چندی نیک نامی را کنار گذاشته و دل به نوبت عاشقی بسپارید و خدای نکرده نگویید که این تابلوی «چشم هایش» که بزرگ علوی در کتابش آورده است عجیب پشت کامیونی است یا باسمه ای است و چه و چه.

Titze n'était pas un éditeur de musique. Il publiait avant tout des livres richement illustrés, où le monde de l'enfance avait d'ailleurs été thématisé à plus d'une reprise.2 De leur côté, les auteurs réunis pour l'édition des Scènes d'enfants ne manquaient pas d'expérience en la matière. Ils avaient tous deux collaboré à Die Gartenlaube, un journal illustré destiné aux familles qui, avec ses millions de lecteurs, représentait une des plus grands réussites de la presse allemande de la fin du 19e siècle. Alexander Zick (1845-1907) s'était par ailleurs fait un nom en illustrant des contes de fées. Quant à Albert Träger (1830-1912), ses activités littéraires, qui avaient lieu en marge de ses responsabilités de juriste et de parlementaire, étaient principalement orientées vers la réalisation de son idéal de rapprochement entre les arts. Les Annales Deutsche Kunst in Bild und Lied, dont il était le rédacteur, ainsi que ses anthologies illustrées de poèmes, qui jouissaient d'un immense succès, lui en fournissaient autant d'occasions.3 La troisième de ces anthologies, publiée en 1871 à Leipzig, présente ici un intérêt particulier. Le titre annonce explicitement que l'on a affaire à une entreprise éditoriale qui dépasse le cadre des volumes illustrés habituels : Lieder, Balladen, Romanzen harmonisch verbunden 1

Fransızca askeri bir terim olup öncü birlik sözcüğünden gelen avangard, başta Fransızca olmak üzere hemen hemen her dilde kültür, sanat ve politika ile bağlantılı, deneysel, yenilikçi işler veya kişiler olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Kültür, sanat gerçeklik tanımları içinde kabul gören kural olarak benimsenmiş ilkeleri sarsıp sınırlarını değiştirmeyi amaç edinir. Bu ilkeler sosyal reformlardan estetik deneyimlerin değişimine kadar çeşitlilik gösterebilir. İlk ortaya çıkışı Romantizm ve Sanayi Devrimi ile başlayan, ticarileştirme, bayağılaştırma, ucuzlatma ve estetik uygunsuzluk gibi kavramlarla tanımlanan kiç formlar kitlesel olarak üretilip dağıtılma imkanı bulur. Zenginleşen orta sınıf kendi tercihleri doğrultusunda edebiyat, müzik, resim gibi çeşitli ürünleri sipariş ederek talepte bulunur. Bu yapılanma da sanatın satılmak için yapılmasına, ticarileşmesine neden olur. Modernistlerce kiç, bilinçli olarak kültür endüstrisinin ideolojisi doğrultusunda kar etmek amacıyla üretime sunulur. Modernist sanat yaratıcılığa, biricikliğe, eşsizliğe dayanan yaşamdan ayrı, kurmaca ve özerk bir evrensel estetik kurma amacındaydı. Bu anlayış dışındaki girişimleri reddedip kiç olarak tanımladılar. Kulka, kiçi sanat olmayan farklı bir estetik grupta tanımlar ve tanım için net bir formül önerir. 1950-1960'lı yıllarda başladığı düşünülen postmodern dönüşüm, Modernizmin tüm değerlerine saldırarak ona sırt çevirir. Başlarda Modernizmin kötü, tehlikeli, zararlı saydığı tüm formlar, özellikle popüler kültür geniş bir kabul görüyordu. İlk kırılma noktası, Pop-art'ın kiç olarak kabul gören ticari kültürü sanata dahil etme girişimiydi. Son aşamada ise Modernizm, kiçi redderken, postmodernizm ona kucak açtı ve sanatın sınırlarını kiçi de içine dahil ederek genişletti.

The commentary to follow was originally published by Figure/Ground (2014) in magazine format, as it appears here. It concerns a pseudonymously published poem entitled Serial Kitsch (Austin and New York: Hworde, 2014). This commentary was subsequently published in academic format in Edia Connole and Gary J. Shipley, eds., Serial Killing: A Philosophical Anthology (London: Schism Press, 2015), 95–103. Shipley has since come forward as the author of this poem. It is currently available as Serial Kitsch (an epic poem) by Gary J. Shipley from Schism2 Press (London, 2017). Georges Bataille, whose work this commentary makes use of, also published pseudonymously. Unless otherwise indicated, all quotations herein are from Serial Kitsch (2014).

The article considers how the narrative of the pandemic has been developed, especially with regard to literature. The case study analyzed is the Italian novel L’assemblea degli animali, written by an anonymous author, whose penname is Filelfo. The article shows that the wide range of classical, literary and artistic references recognizable inside the text corresponds to a precise attitude of the ecologist culture, which is in search for traditional and elevated models to assert their ethical and political objective. The novel brings this directory to the point that it evokes an esoteric dimension of ecology. The article states that this stance is not serious, but ends into a literary game and feeds the needs for entertainment by the cultural industry, rather than giving any real contribution to the ecological question.

El kitsch, vía artística vista por algunos como vulgar, chapucera y hortera,  y por otros como una nueva forma de expresión cultural de la sociedad consumista, tiene uno de sus probables orígenes en el souvenir, la nostalgia y el afán de evocación del pasado del S.XIX. La estética kitsch en conjunto tiene a su vez distintas variantes y niveles. El arte kitsch va desde aquellos que toman su colorismo y eclecticismo como una muestra del poder creativo hasta el objeto que copia a algo conocido por todos y lo presenta a una calidad y precio mucho menores. Para muchos, el paso de lo sublime a lo grotesco. Los objetos de esta tendencia, fabricados en masa para alcanzar a un amplio público, sin demasiado cuidado artístico, se han hecho un hueco en todos los aspectos de la vida, incluyendo el campo de las creencias, donde su presencia también ha tenido adeptos, que lo ven como un moderno medio de transmisión, y detractores, que lo consideran un engaño más del consumismo ¿Hasta qué punto el coleccionismo y el materialismo tienen una base cultual? ¿Qué interés religioso puede ofrecer un objeto hecho únicamente para venderse? ¿Tiene alguna función clara la fusión a discreción de imágenes religiosas con iconos comerciales? Si el objeto kitsch se vuelve único en manos de su poseedor, ¿qué valores puede dar un creyente a objetos personales que en realidad poseen otros miles? Este trabajo ahondará en las raíces del kitsch y su estética para encontrar la finalidad y funcionalidad que puede tener en los objetos religiosos, y viceversa, mostrar el uso que se le puede dar a la religión a través de un objeto (en principio) profano.

Religious kitsch or the materialistic faith.
Abstract. Kitsch, the artistic trend considered by many as common, sloppy and tasteless and by others as a new way to express the culture of consumer society. It might have originated from souvenirs, nostalgia and the intention to bring the 19th century back. Kitsch aesthetic has many variations and levels. Kitsch art has colour and eclecticism as a sample of creative power and it has many objects that copy something known by everyone, then it reintroduces them with less quality and cost. For many people, it represents the step that separates sublime and hideous. The objects from this tendency, made in mass production to reach a wide, barely artistic audience, have found a place in everyday life, including faith. Here it also has many followers that see it as a modern media, and many critics that consider it to be one more machination of consumerism. How far does collecting and materialism have a cultural base?  Which religious fervour can offer an object made only to be sold? Has the fusion between religious images and commercial signs an actual purpose? If the kitsch object becomes unique in the owner's hands, which values can give a believer to personal objects that actually belong to thousands of other people as well? This dissertation will go deep down into the kitsch origin and aesthetics in order to find a purpose and the function that it can have in religious objects and vice versa, to show the use they can give to religion through an object that is apparently secular.

Clement  Greenberg’s  international  reputation  is  partly  due  to  the  success  of  one  of  his  first  and  most  perceptive  essays,  Avant-Garde  and  Kitsch,  published  in  the  Fall  1939  issue  of  “Partisan  Review”.  Despite  its  unsurpassed  importance,  the  arti-cle  still  requires  a  broader  comprehension  of  its  origins:  according  to  Greenberg’s  per-sonal  papers,  the  essay’s  main  concepts  began  to  take  form  during  the  Winter  1939,  when  the  author  was  involved  in  the  drafting  of  a  new  essay  on  Bertolt  Brecht,  still  unpublished today, at that time submitted to the “Partisan Review”’s editorial board but rejected. A second document enables to trace back Avant-Garde and Kitsch’s roots even further:  according  to  a  letter  by  Greenberg,  one  of  the  editors,  Dwight  Macdonald,  plagiarized  the  rejected  script  as  his  last  essay,  Soviet  Society  and  Its  Cinema,  clearly  seemed  to  prove.  The  varied  topics  articulated  in  the  letter,  as  well  as  in  the  draft  on  Brecht,  would  be  at  the  basis  of  Avant-Garde  and  Kitsch,  becoming  crucial  and  early  components of the editorial process of the well-known essay.

Em ele são examinadas três produções do movimento: o livro de Paul Éluard Répétitions (com ilustrações de Max Ernst, 1921), o Manifeste du surréalisme de André Breton (1924) e Une vague de rêves (1924) de Louis Aragon.

Research paper that showcases how "Everything Is Kitsch" in today's world due to globalization.

It focuses on Egypt and how globalization, social classes and the lack of having an individualistic culture; led to a major deculturation within the country.

The paper further provides a solution by showcasing the positive impact if all social classes join forces into seeing that kitsch is no longer the exclusive product of the uneducated masses but, is in fact today's global aesthetic. Also, by developing a "balanced" culture of individuality, could we then truly have a positive global influence (rather than being influenced) and take advantage of the fact that Egypt is a "kitsch museum".

It covers aspects regarding the 'Infitah' that occurred in Egypt, Entrepreneurship in Egypt and Arab Pop- artists to indicate a "balanced" culture of individualism is the best solution to generate global influence.

Se analizaron 27 monumentos eucarísticos del Jueves Santo en iglesias colombianas desde 2004 a 2017 cada dos años. En estas construcciones se identificó la expresión de la estética kitsch por medio de un análisis iconográfico de las estructuras simbólicas ancladas a las superficies visuales de los objetos que se presentan en los monumentos y de los materiales usados en su construcción. El kitsch religioso no tiene el propósito de suscitar reflexión intelectual en el público, más bien su fin es emocional, apela al poder y al fervor de la tradición religiosa que, en el marco del Jueves Santo, lo envuelve todo. El kitsch religioso no tiene propósitos intelectuales, los objetos están ahí y su presencia es suficiente, es por esto que los monumentos del Jueves Santo son apreciados por los sentimientos profundos de devoción que generan en los asistentes. Los monumentos eucarísticos apartan de la realidad tanto al creyente cotidiano como al practicante eventual y remontan a los episodios que se narran a través de su carácter palimpsestual y la metonimia emocional y efímera. Abstract: In this work, 27 Eucharistic monuments of Holy Th ursday erected in churches of Colombia between 2004 and 2017 every second year have been analyzed. In these constructions the expression of kitsch aesthetics has been identifi ed through an iconographic analysis of the symbolic structures embedded in the visual surfaces of the objects placed in the monuments, as well as in the materials used for their construction. Th e religious kitsch is not intended to arouse intellectual refl ection in the public, rather its purpose is emotional; it appeals, instead, to the power and fervor of the religious tradition that, in the context of Holy Th ursday, embraces everything. Th ey separate from the reality both the believer and a potential churchgoer, and they evoke the episodes narrated thought their palimpsestual character and emotional and ephemeral metonymy.

Through defining kitsch art, looking at Bourdieu’s Distinction theory, applying McCoy and Scarborough’s (2014) viewing styles, and linking it to Goffman’s dramaturgical analysis, the following essay will elaborate on the role of kitsch art in society and how it is an example of bad taste.

1. La notion de kitsch est tellement liée à celle de culture qu'à bien des égards les limites entre les deux termes paraissent aujourd'hui indiscernables. Bien entendu, il ne s'agit pas de dire par là que toute culture serait kitsch -alors que tout kitsch est par définition culturel.
