The elections held on 17 June 2006 were won by the opposition. The Smer-SD party (50 seats in the 150-seat National Council) formed a coalition with the Slovak National Party (SNS, 20 seats) and the LS-HZDS (15 seats). In RobertRobert Fico’s 16-member cabinet dominated by Smer, SNS was given control over three ministries (including regional development), with the [S-HZDS in charge of two (justice and agriculture). European affairs in the broad sense (including information society, human and minority rights) remained in control of the Government Chancellery, in the hands of DuSan Caplovi¢, deputy prime minister and Smer vice- chairman. The Foreign Ministry was entrusted to Jan Kubi8, an experienced diplomat nominated by Smer.
