Cadmium Yellow, Blood Red: A Double V Mystery (Double V Mysteries Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 87 ratings

A museum heist, a missing child, a murder, a recent ex-con and an even more recent widow. How many times do we have to pay for our mistakes before life sends us a reprieve?

Juliet Van Allen, museum administrator, discovers that her artist husband is having an affair with another woman. Elmer Vartanian, recently released from prison for a museum robbery, is coerced into helping scout her museum for a heist by a gang that has kidnapped his daughter. Juliet’s husband is murdered. Did she kill him? She needs an alibi – so does the ex-con.

Cadmium Yellow, Blood Red is the first book in the Double V Mysteries series set in New England in the late 1940s and early 1950s. If you like the romance and charm of a classic film, this “cozy noir” will remind you of an era when dramatic stories were elegant, subtle, and even a grim dark alley might lead to the glamour of evening dress and a champagne cocktail.

Enter a world where Modern Art meets old-fashioned murder and take a back seat in Juliet’s sleek 1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan for a fast ride to outrun danger – now.

Lynch writes with authentic knowledge of events, buildings, customs and post war atmosphere of the Hartford area. Art is mentioned briefly and on occasion but this is a story of postwar adjustments, false but real pride in status, friendships and devious deception and betrayal. Throw a murdered artist in the mix and your palette displays all the hues of great story telling, plot line fantastic entertainment. ( My family never visited the tea room but G Fox's orange chiffon cakes were to die for.) Thanks to Lynch's for pulling me back to the past and for a keeper of a mystery!
No sex descriptions and swears are mild (less than 20). I highly recommend this book for young adults and old.

I appreciated the noirish tone of the book, the historical accuracy of the time period including the backstory of one of the characters, and the view of the City of Hartford, Ct in the late 1940’s. Traveling back in time with this author was a treat not to be missed, whether you’re familiar with the area or not.

My current review writing style is that I read a book and ask myself some basic questions. Did I enjoy the story? Yes, I enjoyed reading Cadmium Yellow, Blood Red by Jacqueline T Lynch. Did I stay engaged while reading it? Did the writing flow well and the story make sense? For the most part, yes, although some editing is required. When I'm reading about Elliot and the name Elmer is used erroneously, more than once, I needed to go back and reread to re orient myself. Should I learn that the author has corrected these small flaws, I'll change my rating to 5 stars ! ! !

I got this book for free and put off reading it because I thought the setting in the 40's would not interest me. How wrong I was! This was immediately attention grabbing, totally unique and I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and am so glad to see at least two more books in the series. Just bought the second book!!

This book started well, and the setting and time period are interesting. But the trail of clues is not convincing and it seems to become more disjointed as it goes on. Most of the writing is good but there are a number of editing issues.

I really liked this book. You really get the atmosphere of the period and the characters 'come alive' while you read their story. I highly recommend it.
