Ann Blyth: Actress. Singer. Star. Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

The first book on the career of actress Ann Blyth. Multitalented and remarkably versatile, Blyth began on radio as a child, appeared on Broadway at the age of twelve in Lillian Hellman's WATCH ON THE RHINE, and enjoyed a long and diverse career in films, theatre, television, and concerts. A sensitive dramatic actress, the youngest at the time to be nominated for her role in MILDRED PIERCE (1945), she also displayed a gift for comedy, and was especially endeared to fans for her expressive and exquisite lyric soprano, which was showcased in many film and stage musicals. Still a popular guest at film festivals, lovely Ms. Blyth remains a treasure of the Hollywood's golden age.

This exploration of her career covers in detail her films, television, theatre, and radio performances from a wealth of sources and is illustrated with 275 photographs, some rarely or never before seen.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Now, at last, a book about Blyth's long career...This examines and analyzes how the darker, edgier aspects of Blyth's persona were tamped down in favor of films that showcased her beauty and her singing voice....The book has a lot of detail about her films, her many stage, TV and cabaret appearances...a lavish new career book...glad she is getting her due..." Liz Smith, nationally syndicated entertainment columnist - New York Social Diary

"Lynch gives us thoughtful commentary that helps us better understandthe range of roles Blyth played, and appreciate the nuances of heracting style. Unlike many film historians, Lynch doesn't neglect ordownplay Blyth's work in other media. There's ample coverage here ofcareer achievements in radio, television, and stage (actor-singer BillHayes contributing some valuable reminiscences of their joint concertappearances).

Ann Blyth is now one of the last major survivorsfrom the Golden Age of Hollywood. Jacqueline T. Lynch's book pays herthe tribute she deserves, and some overdue recognition as well." -

This is a lavish book, with a lot of text, and so many beautiful photographs, that you probably wouldn't find anywhere else. It covers all aspects of her life and career. This is a really nice keep-sake kind of book to read in order, or in sections, to keep as a tribute to Ann Blyth. I was really very pleased with my purchase. Thanks!

In the author's foreword, Jacqueline T. Lynch is very clear from the beginning that her book is essentially about Ann Blyth's career; not the personal life of the actress. And I admire Ms. Lynch for respecting Ann Blyth's privacy.
I still gained a strong sense of the person that Ann Blyth is through some of the quotes and comments by the actress herself and others who know her and have worked with her through the years. Ms. Lynch has obviously done extensive research to provide such a thorough and detailed account of the films she discusses in her book; however, she includes such an overwhelming amount of information about each film that I often grew tired trying to wade through it all. The book is also very large and very heavy, which is cumbersome to hold on your lap. Thus, my rating of 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, it's a good effort, but I feel it would have been just as informative if it had been cut by half. The many great photos are a treat...loved them!

Marvelous read about Ann Blyth, an actress I am always intrigued by but know very little about. I appreciate the author's enthusiasm for the films and the extra amount of detailed analysis on the major titles. It has been a job of work compiling this information from many sources. The material is highly readable and when you come to the end you realize this has been a career that justifies this level of presentation. I had it as an e-book whose only drawback was an inability to enlarge the many excellent photographs. Highly recommended.

Three stars for the interesting photographs. As one reviewer said boring (limited insight) treatment of a lovely woman and fine actress--especially when playing poisonous brat on screen daughters.

This thick book is mostly an admirer's opinion (with chronological summery research) of the actress/singer's films & stage work.
Missing are photos of her husband & children.--i.e., Information about her marriage, children and the impressions and opinions of family, friends, co workers about Blyth, her character & temperament. Ditto a critical evaluation of her work.

Although Blyth is still living and has for decades extensively expressed her views in interviews about her personal life, the films she was in, her directors and fellow actors scant is covered in this book & there is little (if any) new source material from this fine performer.
A lengthy interview with Blyth newly critiquing her film career, associates & life's experiences would have been appreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about Ann Blyth

I really enjoyed listening to Jacqueline T. Lynch's new book on Ann Blyth - expertly narrated by Toni Lewis, who manages to blend in well with the material.

I have to admit that I'd only known Ann Blyth from her musicals - although I was aware she was nominated as best supporting actress for Mildred Pierce (1945) - a film I haven't seen (shame, I hear you cry!). I was surprised to learn of all the non musicals'. And doubly surprised later to hear her voice had been dubbed for the musical-drama The Helen Morgan Story!

As has been noted by other reviewers, the book is very detailed - and long at 18hrs. I have to confess, as someone mostly interested in her film career, that I skipped most of the pre-Hollywood material and went straight to the chapters just leading up to when her acting career began. But I think you can read the book any way that suits you and the rest can be a reference or you can dip in and out, as I did, and still very much enjoy the experience.

Naturally, I enjoyed the chapters on her musicals! (in addition to other chapters such as the ones on Mildred Pierce, making The Helen Morgan Story, and The Buster Keaton Story with Ann and Donald O'Connor) and the backstory to them, including on Mario Lanza, Edmund Purdom and many of the stars and studios of 'old Hollywood'.

Ann Blyth comes across as a thoroughly decent down-to earth person. I read a book about Marilyn Monroe recently - how Hollywood destroyed her and the pain and suffering that came with each success and failure. Ann Blyth is the complete opposite and handled Hollywood with the confidence of someone who knew who she was and what she was prepared to pay for fame, which had to fall in with her beliefs and morals. The surprising thing is she set her own boundaries (no pin-ups, for example) without fuss and they were respected.

Despite the wholesomeness, the author manages to make her a very interesting character. She wasn't without ambition but it didn't blind her to the feelings of others. She treated everyone on a film set with respect and was as friendly to the extras as she was to her co-stars.

The book makes you want to watch more of her films (Mildred Pierce is on the list!). A few days ago I started to watch The King's Thief on TCM but soon decided it was like one of her musicals - without music! I expect to have better luck with some other of her films.

All in all, a great book for anyone interested in The Golden Age of Hollywood and, in particular, for fans of Ann Blyth.

I have to say this was not what I expected. While it is a very impressive record of Ann Blyth's career I thought it was going to be more biographic.
There are some interesting bits but not enough. I do not think the general public want to sit down and read every last summary of everything Miss Blyth appeared in from Films, TV, Summer stock, etc. I thought there could have been more anecdotes from Miss Blyth.
