4.3 out of 5 stars 104 ratings

Locked in the back of a minivan headed for who knows where, Azusa Saito realizes she has been kidnapped. Just when she thinks there’s no hope for escape, she is rescued by a man with glowing red eyes. Or is she?

Her supposed rescuer forces her to live in a town of vampires. There she learns the story of her kidnapper, a red-eyed vampire charged with the bothersome role of guarding her from enemy covens and from escaping. He is the dreaded Akaoni, the only vampire all other vampires tremble in fear of. Oddly, he doesn’t scare her though.

What will happen between a powerful, ostracized vampire who never drank blood and a girl who is hunted for her blood? Will love blossom between them when enemies abound within and without the coven? Find out in this thrilling shoujo light novel series!

I've always enjoyed Cross Infinite World's books and the same applies to this one. Although I was starting to get sick of the vampire genre, Hiroro-san managed to put a fresh spin on this highschool-girl-meets-vampire-boy story. I found myself starting to care for the well-being of the characters...

    -Art-
I admired the attention to detail on each piece. I think this was their first novel to use a different artist? They chose some nice scenes to illustrate - no complaints there.

    -Characters-
Azusa was a great, unconventional heroine, and I loved her together with Kouya (even with all his possessiveness). Every character was likable including the bad guys.

    -Story-
A slow start for the characters' journey and for world building, but I'm seeing a lot of potential for the next few volumes. Also this was the fastest moving romance out of CIW's translated novels, and I'm enjoying every bit of it!

I really do like the story a whole bunch! Though of course there were some parts of the story that was a little too slow or too quick but it was so minor and not too much of it happened that I was able to not worry about it too much and just enjoy this romance. I recommend it especially when one wants a vampire story with, let's say, a quite a twist at the end I purely enjoyed. (Spoiler I think? Don't read if you don't want a confusing spoiler: Even though at the end I was confused on on part with who did what with biting of their own lip and saying Azusa's name lol)

As a frequent reader of Crossinfi's products, Akaoni has been their best by far. Like their other light novels, it features a young woman who finds herself caught up in circumstances out of her wildest dreams and follows her struggle to return to her previous ordinary life (which, knowing this genre, will likely never happen). In the case of Akaoni, we follow Azusa Saito who finds herself the victim of a kidnapping and cannot escape. She is rescued by mysterious men who murder her kidnappers, but instead of freeing her, she finds herself their captive. During this time Azusa learns she was the result of a secret experiment conducted by vampires whose numbers have been dwindling and seek to remedy their situation. From there on we explore Azusa's new life in the vampire society and those who seek to protect her like the tall, dark, and handsome titular Akaoni himself, Kyouya, and the dangerous Tsukiharu who happens to share a similar background as Azusa.

Akaoni feels like the most well written of Crossinfi's works, featuring more developed characters, interactions, and better pacing than their other light novels. If you enjoyed My Favorite Song and Violet Knight, I would very much recommend Akaoni. It shares My Favorite Song's light heartedness as well as some of Violet Knight's more serious tone and action moments. I do feel like Akaoni starts to falter toward the end of the novel and could have gone in a better one than the one that was chosen but it only detracts a bit from its overall enjoyment. *Spoilers* I would caution those who dislike heroines being thrown around (i.e. all the kidnapping and restrictions under the vampires' eyes Azusa must endure) and misunderstandings in romance (there is a forced kiss for people who dislike those) since those can be turn offs.

It's a great title and I really wanted to love this more but I just couldn't get into it. The story is good, the romance is nice. I think it just needs to work on the delivery. Other than that, good read during your free time.

Personally, I’m a sucker for vampire stories, with them being one of my favorite fictional creatures. And honestly, I liked this author’s take on vampires and how they work. It felt different from most other works I have read. The characters were enjoyable and well written, especially our main girl Azusa, with her strong, but kind personality (though a bit air headed at times) and Kouya, the slightly brooding and broken male lead. Only one character (I’ll call him T for short) truly irked me a bit in the beginning/middle because he seemed really cliched with, well, everything, but he ended up being enjoyable by the end. My only real complaint would be that some of the humor felt a bit out of place or too over the top at times, making it a bit awkward given the situation. Overall, it was a great story and I can’t wait to read the second volume.

This was a fun and very interesting story. I’ve read many vampire story and I got to say that this story was very unique and something I have never read before. It dose end with many questions that still need to be answer, so I will be buying the next book in the series. Thanks to the Author for a wonderful story.
Looking forward to the next book.

So it wasn't a graphic novel like I expected but it isn't that bad of a book.
