The Sidekick Never Gets the Girl, Let Alone the Protag’s Sister! Volume 1 Kindle Edition
Then: Kunugi Kou waged bloody warfare as a hero in another world. Now: He’s a perfectly average high-schooler with a perfectly exceptional best friend: Ayase Kaito. The living incarnation of every cheesy romcom protagonist ever written, Kaito’s charming personality and looks that could kill have earned himself the harem of quirky beauties that every protagonist deserves—and Kou is dead-set on supporting him from the shadows as the ultimate wingman extra! And it’s all going great—that is, until a wrench is thrown into the works in the form of another romcom staple: the protagonist’s little sister, Ayase Hikari, who meets Kou under the most outlandish of circumstances possible. Even worse, it kinda sorta just maybe seems like she might have a thing for him? Now it’s up to the world’s most “extra” extra to crawl his way back into the obscurity he longs for!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2021Honestly, I didn't read the description and just bought this out of boredom but this is truly fascinating. As somewhat evident in the description, my man's somewhat obsessed with staying as an extra, wingman for the Ayase Kaito fella, and it was initially really off-putting, that's just how much it jarred in his mind but learning more about him as the book continues on, it all starts making more sense and many pieces come together nicely. It must be said this book is far from just a rom-com, the history behind the main character drives a lot of his actions, be it better or for worse, and the ending what quite something... I truly do not know where this series is headed, it's fascinating although I suspect the ending (whichever volume that'll be) is going to be somewhat depressing despite the genre it's supposedly located in, but who knows. Either way, it was a good read, can't wait for the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2021Wasn't sure what is was getting into when got this but I have no regrets... well, the beginning could have been better, but it was smooth sailing after that. This story definitely made me laugh and want to keep reading as soon as I finished it. I suggest you give it go and see for yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2021Wow, what an ending! I have to admit that when I saw the cover to this light novel a while back, I was suspecting it to be just a simple “ROM-COM” (romance comedy) anime story. Man, was I wrong..... ⚠️WARNING⚠️: There will be SPOILERS mention in this review. If you do not want this story to be spoiled in any way, please, don’t read any further in this review. If you are okay with a few spoilers, then read on! You have been warned.
Where to start.... Basically this IS a “ROM-COM” with a little Isekai fantasy sprinkle in a little here and there.
Our main protagonist, “Kou”, as we come to know his as by that name, isn’t really your average anime magic character. Kou, doesn’t even want to be that main protagonist in this story (which is ironic, because he is literally the main character in this story)! He just wants to live his life on the side-lines as a support character. Why? You have to read the book to find out ( you didn’t think I was going to spoil everything, did you?)! He is also the destroyer of anime troupes in this book! If I had a number of how many anime troupes/themes he destroyed or made fun of in this story, that number would be in the triple digits!
Now, there were a few parts in the book where our protagonist gets off topic in some cases. For example, he went on a paragraph long rant about shampoo. I found this tedious, but I soon came to understand why he does it. You see, Kou isn’t your normal anime protagonist.... He has a past, a dark and troubling past. It is filled with bloodshed and betrayal. I was shocked to learn the few things I did about our mysterious protagonist, and actually came to understand why he didn’t want the role as the main character in his own story. If you too, reader of my review, want to learn the “why’s” and “how’s” of this story’s main protagonist, then I must recommend that you read this book. Give it a chance to grab you and shock you as it has for me. I promise you that you won’t regret it (hopefully).
Toshizo, thank you for this amazing story! You certainly know how to throw a good amount of mystery, drama, humor, and anime troupes destroying logic into your story. Definitely looking forward to the next volume to this series. Thank you again for all the twists and turns of this story. To say that I was “blown-away” would have been an understatement.
FINAL RATING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2021I really enjoyed this novel, all the characters were amazing, the setting interesting, and the interactions subtle but with depth. I definitely recommend if you enjoy a bit of a self-effacing MC, which I'm a sucker for myself.
I will say, one of the big reveals at the end was spoiled for me in one of the other reviews without a warning, but even this knowledge did not ruin my experience. Such was the fun ride that it overlooked even that. I do mention it as a word of warning for others though.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2021This story pretty average for me. The set-up and payoff were competently done. The only downside for me was that the main voice is a little more self-indulgent than I like.I get that he's working very hard to get us to see the world the same way that he does I just thought he could have been more concise.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021These books are good because of the authors sense of humor and writing style. It's tongue in cheek, almost satire at times, and fun to read because of the character's inner thoughts. If Deadpool wrote Konosuba for a pg13 audience you'd probably get something like this.
Read: Not for everyone, but for those with a specific funny bone.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2021The protagonists thoughts are all over the place, but this was pretty good. I really like his backstory, which is hinted at in the beginning, but gets explored at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Read
The novel was for me a enjoyable one, foremost because of the protagonist's inner musings and the seldom trope of a character's life after returning from another world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start
An interesting twist on not only romcom genre but also another intertwined genre that melds together surprisingly well. Funny but with a lot of heart - really enjoyed this and looking forward to reading volume 2!

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring
I just stopped in the middle of this one and can't go any further. Internal monologues just kiling me. Avoid.
