Kairos Catadyn was a rising priest in the New Revelationist Church—until he took a missionary post on the planet Pantoll, a storm-ridden wasteland where he lost his faith after unintentionally committing an unspeakable act. Now Kairos wastes his days avoiding his guilt and ignoring reports that the Osetra—a race not seen since humanity’s exodus from Old Earth centuries prior—have returned to human space, this time to conquer.

But when Kairos unexpectedly acquires a strange Osetran artifact, he’s suddenly hunted by powerful interests—governing corporations, cults, and crime lords. Unable to ignore a sense of the divine hand at play and a chance for redemption, Kairos goes on the run across worlds to uncover the artifact’s coveted secrets.

Truth, however, comes with a cost. Kairos learns that an existential threat from an unexpected source lies at the center of the Osetran artifact’s mystery—one that links the fates of both races and could fundamentally alter the universe. But to stop it, Kairos will have to face his spiritual scars and risk his life on a faithful gamble.

The Astral Prophet is a sprawling sci-fi novel about Kairos, an ex-priest, as he stumbles upon an alien artifact that leads him on a wild adventure through space. The book was a fresh take on a well-trodden genre, especially considering it is the author’s first novel! I’m giving it four stars because I felt the beginning of the book was a bit slow - but once it picked up, I sped through the rest of it.

One thing that separates this book from others in the science fiction genre is that it draws heavily on religious themes - especially sin, confession, and forgiveness. As a reader with a non-Christian religious background, it took me out of the world building a little bit to see such a strong Christian influence in a universe where religion has supposedly been reimagined after an alien encounter. Nonetheless, putting religious spin on the space opera gave this book a unique perspective on the genre that I appreciated.

Overall, I’d definitely recommend this book for any fan of science fiction!

The Astral Prophet was an enjoyable, easy, and riveting read that kept me up past my anticipated bed time on many nights as I barreled through the final chapters. The book’s protagonist is Kairos, a disaffected priest of a morphed and future Christian tradition who has ostensibly abandoned his faith but can’t shake the faith’s residual moral obligations and his own past, which force him into adventure.

Beyond offering exhilarating action and plot twists, The Astral Prophet ventures into intellectually fertile territory. By placing Kairos at the intersection of faith, morality, and a new age of technological marvels, the novel invites readers to consider: When sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, what is the boundary between the miraculous and the technological? How would humanity’s beliefs and values shift upon encountering superior alien technologies or species? How does technological supremacy affect the distribution of worldviews and values? These questions are gracefully interwoven into the story, giving the book more depth than a standard sci-fi thriller.

My one minor critique is that a handful of the scenic descriptions, though vivid, felt tangential to the story’s core. While beautifully rendered, these details occasionally lacked the cultural or thematic significance that would help anchor me more fully in the novel’s world. I found myself sometimes quickly skimming descriptive sections to get to the action.

Still, The Astral Prophet remains a thoroughly enjoyable experience that pairs old-world spiritual questions with futuristic wonders: virtual reality, interstellar travel, and advanced alien civilizations are all here, bound together by timeless human themes of purpose, regret, and hope. For readers looking for a thought-provoking adventure that balances deep questions with page-turning action, this is a journey worth taking.

Evan Schindewolf’s The Astral Prophet delivers smart tech, thoughtful world-building, and relatable religious questions, all tied together with a likable cast and a twisty plot.

The opening was slightly slow for me but it gives the reader time to settle in before whisking them away at a very entertaining pace. If you’re like me, waiting to be grabbed unceremoniously by the collar, just sit tight!

    Some specific highlights:

Schindewolf’s creativity and attention to detail stand out, especially in the tech and environmental mechanics. Travel cubes with verification codes, public-transit elevators to space, and biobullets that can be grown in-weapon are just a few examples of how he outfitted his world in ways that are both practical and delightful. The descriptions of space travel and challenges in zero-gravity environments were also well done, making the world-building feel realistic and grounded, and each new location fresh.

Techy characters like Rhody and Jaxx were a favorite! Even the artifact’s behavior and changes had a subtle personality that kept me turning the page to find out more.

Where The Astral Prophet really shines is in its exploration of how humanity might reimagine religion in a future where Earth is no longer home. Specifically how traditions might persist or evolve and how powerful that might be. Schindewolf weaves these ideas seamlessly into a plot with stakes worthy of the adventure our characters must embark on.

Overall, The Astral Prophet is an engaging debut. I’m looking forward to future works from this author!
