'The Rise of the Crooners' is no less than a key sourcebook, for those interested in the brief--but ultimately, very influential--period on the American musical spectrum, known as "The Crooner Era". But this book isn't simply about "the crooners" and "crooning"--it presents both the "before," as well as the aftermath of this now largely-forgotten moment in time, when a few shockingly intimate young men snuck their way into the homes of an adoring radio public, in a way that was previously impossible. The writers clearly portray how revolutionary these singers were in their day--when radio and the amplifying mic first attained wide-popularity. Crosby, Columbo & Vallee--along with several other golden-toned vocalists--created a whole new style of intimate, "up-close" singing that caused a sensation--and the sounds of pop vocalists of the 21st century can be directly linked to this era, too. The book is extremely informative and the writing is excellent.The writers have clearly done their homework. I consider this a "go-to" source material, when I'm looking to confirm facts and dates--I trust the scholarship of it that well. Well-done! I only hope there could be a "Part II" someday!
