Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The Complete Book of Knots provides easy-to-follow instructions for selecting and tying more than 100 of the most useful knots. With knots for climbing, sailing, and fishing, every knot entry contains a brief introduction to the history and development of the knot, its alternative names, and information on its uses and special features. Color illustrations guide you step-by-step through the stages of tying each knot correctly and safely. Distinctive symbols provide a condensed at-a-glance key to all the suitable uses of a particular knot from the Bowline - the king of knots - to the elegant twists of the Cat's Paw and the practical simplicity of the Cow Hitch. In addition to knot-tying techniques, the book contains a comprehensive glossary of terms to guide you through the complexities of different rope types and helps you choose the right rope for every task. (7 1/2 X 10 1/4, 160 pages, photos, color illustrations, charts, icons)

Amazingly enough, I wasn't entirely satisifed with Mr. Budworth's book on decorative knots, The Complete Book of Decorative Knots. This one is different. Maybe it's because the knots in question are more for function than decoration, but I'm able to follow the directions easily. The selection of knots is pretty thorough and the inclusion of a description for where a given knot can be used is very helpful. I've found it very useful learning new knots and reviewing knots I've used in the past. I've been using it as a reference while teaching Scouts how to tie basic knots. It's been very handy.

I am very happy to have found a copy of this book. While it was used, it arrived in pristine condition and I doubt it was ever read.

This book is informative and easy to follow. I've found J.D Lenzen has simplified knot tying making it easy for novice's and beginners. Unlike some other books on the market. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the art of decorative knots and knot tying.

The book wasn't quite as complete as I had hoped, but the illustrations are good, and the short histories on the knots were interesting. For the price, it was a fine book. Some knots have different names and it seems that there were several repeated knots in the pages of the book. I'm sure this was because of the way the book was organized, but I would rather have had more knots than repeated ones.

I've owned half a dozen knot books, and this is the best of them. The problem with so many knot books is they show you step three as step one, and make you feel like an idiot because you can't even start. This one doesn't do that. It has by far the easiest instructions for a monkey's fist of any book I've seen.
I don't get the critical reviews. The author is a certified knot superstar and certainly knows his junk. He's seen the other books, and wrote this one. I think most of the criticisms fall into the "over-analyzing" category, or people who just aren't comfortable with two-thumbs-upping anything. Listen--this is a fantastic book. You want to learn knots? It'll teach you.

This book is a good reference to the art of tying knots. I have been working on knots the past few weeks. I am and have been curious about the origin of these useful tools and techniques for a while. These works of art are a joy to tye and frustrating at the same time, as are the hobbies of most people. I will be purchasing a few more books to further my knowledge of this art. Thanks to the Author of this fine book.

. . . or printer's odd lot because the diagrams seem to be printed with only 2 of the RGYBIV ('primary' colors used to produce secondary colors for final prints. Everything looks washed-out -- in other words the version of printing that does not make it to a book sellers' shelves. It's readable, but doesn't look like a final product.
