Outer Ragna: Volume 1 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 19 ratings

PotatoStarch, a live streamer who's gaining popularity for his excitable attitude and witty banter, has begun streaming Dragon Demon RPG-DX, a game with a cult following known for its extreme difficulty and unreasonable systems. Only masochists would play it.
Meanwhile, in the world of the game, a fierce war between humans, elves, and vampires is reaching its bloody peak. The humans, lacking in magic, were forced into a defensive battle—until a savior appeared. Wielding a battleaxe, a young girl named Kuroi stepped forth to oppose both enemy armies. Her heroic efforts earned her the names “Dragonslayer” and “Killer of Demons.” Thanks to Kuroi, a girl “loved by God,” humans counter-attack.
PotatoStarch is just a video game player. He dives into this world hoping to forget the tiring real world. But through an unexpected series of events, he ends up almost “possessing” Kuroi. As he reaches the game’s climax, Kuroi discovers a mysterious power and PotatoStarch’s fate is changed forever.

I thought this was a wonderful book, full of energy and intelligence, with deft writing and excellent pacing.

A while back, Sony ran an ad called "Michael," in which characters from PlayStation games saluted the player who'd fought beside them. I remember feeling a suspicious lump in my throat when I saw that ad, and I felt it again while reading this book.

That said, I think even readers who aren't gamers would feel moved. Ultimately, this is a book for readers who refuse to give up hope.

Unlike most isekai stories, the protagonist does not travel to another world and become somebody else. He is litteraly the player controlling a character, or at least, during specific events. For him it is a computer game, for the NPCs it is as if they received a blessing by a god much needed in their struggle against a brutal world. The mystery and twist are intriguing - a nice change of pace.

We observe the story from many quickly changing different perspectives except the girl's. It is a mechanic I dislike, and at times it is confusing, not helped by how fast paced the story is and how little we learn about the world. It is a potential downside to a show don't tell the author uses.

All in all, it is an intriguing story, but not for me. The constantly changing point of view with a lack of depth to characters and world is just not for me.
