Tearmoon Empire: Volume 1 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 758 ratings

Surrounded by the hate-filled gazes of her people, the selfish princess of the fallen Tearmoon Empire, Mia, takes one last look at the bleeding sun before the guillotine blade falls...

Only to wake back up as a twelve-year-old! With time rewound and a second chance at life dropped into her lap, she sets out to right the countless wrongs that plague the ailing Empire. Corrupt governance? Check. Border troubles? Check. Natural calamities and economic strife? Check.

My, seems like a lot of work.

Hard work and Mia don’t mix, so she seeks out the aid of others, starting with her loyal maid, Anne, and the brilliant minister, Ludwig. Together, they strive day and night to restore the Empire. Little by little, their tireless efforts begin to change the course of history, pushing the whole of the continent toward a new future.

And why did the selfish princess have a change of heart, you ask? Simple—she didn’t. She’s just terrified of the guillotine. They hurt like hell, and Mia hates pain more than work.

Lazy, selfish, and a complete coward, the ill-equipped princess of the Tearmoon Empire, armed with memories of her past life and a diary from the future, tries to avoid dying at the guillotine again and changes the very course of history in the process!

So I first discovered the anime and then soon learned it was actually a light novel! To my knowledge there is just the one season out though but I immediately stopped watching and went to read this first. And I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve read quite a bit of the typical reincarnation LN’s and I’ve seen a few of the ones where time rewinds for them. In this case this isn’t reincarnation but rather the spoiled main character gets executed but gets a second chance as time rewinds for her to fix her terrible decisions.

What makes this different to me is that rather than Mia- the main, being focused on actually becoming a nicer person- she makes good decisions by mistake with the only intention of making sure her future isn’t the same gruesome one. In other stories I’ve read like this, the MC tends to be dumb and whereas I wouldn’t say Mia is smart, but her selfishness actually has her making the better choices. I also appreciate that this LN includes illustrations as well! Not all of them do so that was a nice touch!

All in all I would say it’s a good read! Pretty funny too!

I've become a real fan of the do-over series recently, where the protagonist goes back in time and tries to live their life better a second time, so this sounded like a cute and fun read.
It is SO much more than just cute! Mia, the protagonist, is quite self-centered, but she's doing a lot of good, so it's funny and enjoyable to read. Mia is a hilarious character to follow, and the author adds the best, most sarcastic comments as well--so much so that I laughed so hard that I cried many times while reading. This was an incredible and entertaining book!!! I highly recommend!!!

Tearmoon is a good book and Mia as we are introduced is a hysterical protagonist. Very much I am reminded of the mistaken relationship in Overload between Ainz/Momonga and his floor guardians like Demiurge. A relationship where Mia's actions are constantly misunderstood or misinterpreted by those around her and eventually give her a reputation she doesn't really deserve.
My only real complaint is the authors neverending quarterbacking of Mia misunderstandings, there is a point where not all of the events Mia manages needs to be "explained" by the end of the book and feels annoying. On the plus side Mia starts out as selfish, afraid of confrontation but with a desire to reward the people now who stood by her in the previous timeline when she was 20 and Noah no has done a nice job of laying groundwork for slow change with Mia throughout book (and I suspect the series) as her 12yr old self.
Overall, I look forward to reading the next book.

Okay, the above isn't really accurate. Our precious heroine, Princess Mia Luna Tearmoon, is actively trying to prevent the revolution that brings down her empire and causes her death by guillotine. The thing is, Mia isn't really the hero type. She is lazy, self centered, and of only average intelligence. What she is though is highly motivated. Remembering being imprisoned for three years and having her head chopped off will do that to a person. Unfortunately, despite having a copy of her diary from the previous timeline, she doesn't clearly understand what caused a lot of the problems and has even less idea of how to solve them.

Luckily for her she knows people who can help. Even more luckily people keep misinterpreting her actions. Selfish acts are seen as generous, and even when she is trying to embarrass or put someone down the victim assumes she is helping them. Basically she is Katarina from My Next Life As A Villianess, though this story isn't an isekai. If you enjoyed Katarina you will love Mia. It's a lighthearted and easy read and the plot is about as straightforward as can be. Don't expect a whole lot of depth, but it's a pleasant read. I have no doubt it will be an anime at some point.

I may be easily amused but everytime I read this series I find myself laughing with my whole body. I really love the dichotomy between the the MCs true character and how she is viewed by others. The author does a marvelous job of poking fun at their character while also making the reader root for the MC. I am also amazed that the side characters were written well enough that you don't feel as if they are easily fooled and therefore stupid. I am do glad that I have this book a try because it's easily become one of my favorites.

If you're a general fan of reincarnation romance stories and shojou in general, you will absolutely love this story! Mia, our formerly-bratty-but-currently-terrified heroine, is an absolute scream to follow as she basically does everything she can to make her Tearmoon empire thrive and thus, avert the blade of the guillotine from falling down on her own neck. She's an absolute scream to follow as the narration makes it clear that her "saintly" actions are nothing more than self-serving ones that get misinterpreted by everyone around her.

Nonetheless, Mia is a lovable (if incredibly selfish) (anti)-heroine that is just so much fun to follow... and given the sadness of her past fate, I ended up really rooting for her and her friends to succeed. She's just wonderful, honestly. So I highly recommend this story!

Essentially, this is a Time Travel story where the female MC goes back in time to make different decisions. Though, unlike a lot of similar stories the MC is not Altruistic, a Saint, or has any sort of Passion for Justice. If anything, most of her motivations are the exact opposite of those. However, the changes she makes cause huge ripples that greatly alter the opinions of those around her, and the activities/tasks they do. Which leads to most of the humor in the story, but also brings out a higher level of realism compared to most Time Travel stories. As this is not a story about one unrealistic "Mary Sue" character changes a whole Empire singlehandedly. This is a story of one influential person affecting those around her, and thru their combined efforts they are slowly and realistically improving/rehabilitating an Empire.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit of light fun.
Reviewed in Japan on April 30, 2020
I got this book on a whim and I’m glad I did. It’s a simple bit of fun, but it’s also a (mostly) well-written story.

Mia is an interesting protagonist. Both motivated and lazy, kind and petty. Forever driven to save her own skin. Always misunderstood in the most positive way possible. Classic comedy of errors stuff, but it works.

Honestly, only real criticism is that the book shows its Japanese roots in ways that are cliche and at times laughable. Despite being in a fantasy world, bathing in a hot spring and making bentos (“lunchboxes” in the story, but it clear what they are) are important parts of the plot. The author clearly wasn’t interested in anything more than European-style window dressing.

We also get laughable stuff with people having Orca and Beluga as middle and surnames. “Exotic” to a Japanese audience, I suppose. But laughable to English-speakers.

In any case, this is a nice bit of light reading and I’ll be getting the next volume too.
