i did it i killed the final guy whoopee
this game is so good but also realllllyyy bad. the sense of scale the game gives you is incredible and i've never really played a game like it and i love big monsters so i really hope that would mean i really, REALLY love this game but there's just a flew massive problems that just hold it back.
for the positives, this game is beautiful. maybe the best looking game i've ever played. the colossuses have really incredible and creative monster designs that aren't just big lizard or big ape and the solutions to killing them are for the most part really rewarding. the spectacle is just on another level too. there are some set pieces here that i'll definitely never forget.
too bad this game also SUCKS it suuuuuuucks. i hate having to ride my horse for like 20 minutes to figure out where to go only to go in to a dead end or fall of a cliff and have to restart all over again that suuuuuucks. it doesn't give me the sense that i'm going on an adventure. it gives me the sense that i'm doing chores. and why does the camera prioritize looking down when all your enemies are giants and above you wtf that's a genuinely baffling choice. the last two bosses really suck too. they're just pretty boring obstacle courses that when you fail you have to restart allllll the way from the bottom.
it's still a great game that i recommend but it could've been so much better

this is probably the best story in any video game of all time i think?? just the main story itself about harry's depression and trying to solve the case is incredible. the depression stuff is like crazy relatable and the detective side makes you feel like such a fucking genius it's insane. you spend so much of the game being a lameass loser that when you go and do something actually badass you're genuinely a superstar. the actual writing of this game is basically the best of anything i've ever read, too. there are so many little quotes that are gonna stick with me for a long time.
and then there's so many little side stories that don't matter all that much and are absolutely mind blowing. my favorites were the payphone and the random numbers, the annette deduction, and the night club.
my only problem with this game (and it's a big problem) is the checks. the checks are terrible. like top 1 biggest fumbles in game design ever terrible. why would you permanently lock off your best sections of the game to like over half the playerbase??? it's genuinely baffling. sometimes it's cool and tense when you pass a hard check but usually it just blocks you off from a really cool interaction. why??? to encourage repeat playthroughs??? fuck that this game is 30 hours long i don't have the time for that. with something like undertale, it's only 6 hours long so im happy to replay the game to see the stuff i missed but 30 hours is insane.
why are you stonewalling me from the best parts of your game?
idk. im definitely planning on replaying this game anyways cause of all the stuff i missed out on and maaayybbbee then it'll get bumped up to a 5. i'll my get gun next time.
“On the coast of the Martinaise inlet, in a small weather-beaten stave church built 380 years ago by settlers from the Occident, most likely to guard against an anomaly at its centre, an officer of the RCM is contorting his body into idiotically rigid shapes, as he invents the future of dance music… it’s the hardest anyone has ever danced”
