      Former Atlanta homicide detective Patrick "Tick" Kelly moved to remote Mango Key after his beloved wife and children were killed in a home invasion by a drugged-out person. He spent the first couple of years in a drunken haze but, now eight years later, he has turned his life around and become a best-selling author. He's still a recluse and prefers to ignore anything that happens in the semi-abandoned mansion at one end of the key.Special Agent Kate Rush has resigned her job with the DEA after one final encounter with her supervisor Special Agent Lawrence Tyler, an incompetent agent always propped up by his father who is the Governor of Florida. She has gotten her Ph.D. and planned to write a cookbook featuring her grandmother's recipes. One problem: she doesn't know how to cook. When she is approached to do some off-the-books work for the DEA surveilling that same mysterious mansion, boredom makes her say yes.There she meets Tick and uncovers lots more than she had imagined when they rescue a young girl who is being trafficked. Meanwhile, someone is attempting to blackmail Lawrence Tyler who wants one last big score before he is fired from the DEA and hopes discovering what is going on at Mango Key and the mansion will be it.This story is told from Tick, Kate and Tyler's points-of-view. I had some problems with the book and the narration. First of all, the narrator wasn't very good at the female voices. But the big problem had to do with the text. Things that I think were meant to be humorous banter and teasing between Tick and his brother Pete and Kate and her best friend Sandy came off sounding mean and abrasive. I also found the plot of the book a little disjointed. I'm not sure what the key mystery was supposed to be. If it was Tyler's being blackmailed, why was so much time spent on Kate and Tick? If it was supposed to be about the mystery of the goings-on at the compound on Mango Key, that plot thread just seemed to fizzle out with little resolution. I can't really recommend this one. I'm glad that both the Kindle and audiobook were purchased for very little money.

      A well-written mystery with a touch of romance. Ms. Michaels does an excellent job of developing her characters. I could easily picture tough, but tender, Sandy and Kate, grief-stricken Tick, slimy, smarmy Lawrence. Even the more minor characters were well-developed. The story was intriguing. What was the governor's big secret? What was going on at that place on the beach? Where did Bird come from? My biggest wish is that this novel had been slightly longer. Rather than jump to an epilogue at the end, I wish Ms. Michaels had taken a couple more chapters to explore the relationships between the main characters. And, there were a couple of unanswered questions, such as where did Bird come from? On the whole, though, Southern Comfort was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to fans of the mystery genre.

      Not up to the usual good standards of Fern Michaels. This story was so slow in places and didn't hold the reader's interest. There were many descriptive sentences that just didn't need to be included. All in all this was a disappointing book and I have been a Fern Michaels fan for years.

      Ugh. I won this as a Goodreads Giveaway. When I read the synopsis, I entered into the giveaway, thinking this was a police thriller of sorts.Um. No.To be fair, I will disclose that this type of book is just not my thing. Had I walked by this book in a book store, the title and the cover would NEVER have attracted me. I am not a fan of Danielle Steele, Mary Higgins Clark, and this book, is most definitely in that vein.I have multiple issues with this book. The plot is nearly non-existent, and the components that do exist are so ridiculously transparent, I could tell from the first 20 pages that all the main characters would end up together (which they do, in a TRIPLE wedding ceremony at the end). The dialogue is terrible! Ms. Michaels' characters sound like 40 somethings who've incorporated the personality of their beloved southern grandma, and yet occasionally remember their relative youth, and try to be "hip". By the way, despite the fact that many of these folks are law enforcement, their thought process and motivations seem to far more closely resemble those of horny co-eds than hardened homicide detectives and DEA agents. Her gender stereotyping is also problematic. The females are shallow, concerned mainly with creature comforts, their wardrobe and the heat, unless of course they are kicking the ass of their whiny male boss, while the males are sort of soft and remarkably un-lawman like. It's honestly a shame, because the shell of a good thriller is there, but, it was not written - so much could have been done to develop a real relationship between a former homicide detective who is trying to heal from the murder of his entire family, and the struggles of a female DEA agent who has been married to her job and getting limited rewards from it, while watching her life sort of pass her by - she is driven, but lonely. In the meantime, the human trafficking story which serves as the investigation in progress, seems to be used by Michaels as a completely underdeveloped storyline. I mean, the fodder was there:h political bad guys, double crossing, espinonage, and people in high and low places with secrets. Instead, none of that gets developed, and we get vapid characters who display bad cussing skills, broad gender stereotyping, and trite, situated into completely transparent plot lines, which seem to be put in place to basically allow the main cast members to conveniently come into contact with each other for the purpose of sexual fantasy. Ms. Michaels should watch some Dexter or read some really good police/law enforcement procedurals before she tries this again. Also, the title has NOTHING to do with the contents of the book whatsoever. Don't get it.Not my cup of tea.

      I won this book thru Library Thing Early Reviewers and this is the first book that I have read by Fern Michaels. I adored the characters and like the authors sense of humor, she reminds me of a cross between Janet Evanovich and Harlan Coben. It was a quick read and I like how she has the characters have a progression. The only thing I didn’t like is the jumping around of the characters, that always drives me crazy.
