While he is definitively credited with painting the Arena Chapel, his appointment by the Commune of Florence in 1334 to construct the new campanile of the Florence Cathedral underscores his broader impact. However, Giotto's birth date, birthplace, physical appearance, apprenticeship details, the chronological order of his works, and even the attribution of famous paintings in the Upper Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi remain subjects of scholarly contention.
