Orhan Pamuk nació en Estambul, Turquía, en 1952. Premio Nobel de Literatura 2006, realizó estudios de arquitectura y periodismo, y ha pasado largas temporadas en Estados Unidos, en las universidades de Iowa y Columbia. Es autor de las novelas Cevdet Bey e hijos, La casa del silencio, El castillo blanco, El libro negro, La vida nueva, Me llamo Rojo, Nieve, El museo de la inocencia, Una sensación extraña, La mujer del pelo rojo y Las noches de la peste, así como de los volúmenes de no ficción Estambul. Ciudad y recuerdos, La maleta de mi padre, El novelista ingenuo y sentimental, y de la colección de ensayos Otros colores. Su éxito mundial se desencadenó a partir de los elogios que John Updike dedicó a la novela El castillo blanco. Desde entonces ha obtenido numerosos reconocimientos internacionales: el premio al Mejor Libro Extranjero en Francia, el Grinzane Cavour en Italia y el premio internacional IMPAC de Irlanda, los tres por Me llamo Rojo.
