Introduction
Throughout history, medals have been awarded to specific people in recognition of an achievement of significance, most frequently in relation to a military campaign. They can range from the highest military honour available in rewarding the deeds of an individual, to the distribution of many low ranked awards to honour a groups' participation in an act of victory. Most medals are made of gold, silver or bronze depending on the rank of the award, and are attached to coloured ribbons to be worn on military uniform.
The main bulk of army medals are awarded for specific campaigns and battles, and this booklet documents the medals and awards of the British Empire from the 18th century up to the present day. These awards range from the earliest fighting in India and South Africa, to the brutal wars of the 20th century, as well as joint operations with other nations in a global peacekeeping effort. In addition, many medals were awarded upon completion of a term of service, for both civilian and military personnel and for members of the Home Nations and Commonwealth countries, in recognition of their dedication and service to the British Empire. Finally, a host of medals were awarded for specific events such as the jubilee or coronation of a monarch, and for being part of an Order of Chivalry.
Each entry includes the title of the medal or award, an image of the medal, the number of medals awarded since the inception (if known), and a brief description of the medal or award. The awards are also divided into nine suitable categories, according to their place in British History and the nature of the award.

Baronets Badge
# awarded since its inception – Unknown
Brief description of history behind it and its significance – Associated with holders of a hereditary baronetcy awarded by the crown, and was first introduced by James I in 1611. The award is practically obsolete in modern times because hereditary honours are generally no longer recommended.
Knight Bachelor
# awarded since its inception – Unknown
Brief description of history behind it and its significance – Introduced by King Henry III in the 9th century and instituted by King George V in 1926 to give the Imperial Society of Knights Bachelor a more distinctive badge to show their rank.
Order of the British Empire Civil 1st Type
# awarded since its inception – Unknown
Brief description of history behind it and its significance – The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was founded to reward service to the British Empire by King George V in 1917. In 1918 the Order was split into the Civil and Military orders, each with their respected coloured ribbons. This type was issued from 1917-1936.
