      The Tower and the Sea

      The Tower and the Sea is the first book of the Midnight Sea Society. Its name comes from ancient times, a place beyond history and memory, when a great tower reached up toward the heavens from the center of a coastal city. Now, the ancient tower is gone, but a new tower is rising in its place.

      The Midnight Sea Society is that new tower, both as a people and as a belief. Just as the great tower of old reached up into the sky, so too will we dare to stretch forth and raise our hands into the heavens. Our sea isn’t one of water and sand and winds, but a much greater ocean. Our tower stands before the sea of dreams, an endless realm that you can shape with your thoughts and your will. This ocean of dreams is the Midnight Sea.

      Come, learn the secrets of your hidden purpose. Discover the gifts that you have been given by your creator, so long forgotten. Join us in the Midnight Sea Society, so that you will never be alone again. Walk with me along the shores of the Midnight Sea, and learn how to dream.

      Chapter 1: The Foundation

      The teachings of the Midnight Sea Society form a tower, reaching into the spiritual sky. This is much like the Great Tower at the center of the First City. The foundation of the tower is its most important part, the base which must support everything else. Learn about the foundation of our teachings. Discover your place in the world, and what your purpose in life might be.

      We Are All Connected

      You are not alone. At the moment of your birth, you became part of something greater than you could possibly imagine. When you came into this world, you took your place in a lineage of human connections that stretches back into the past, and reaches forward into the future. Just for a moment, think about all those people who lived before you, how their actions shaped the world you now live in. Thousands of people, hundreds of thousands, lived their lives in just the right way so you could be born in the here and now. We’re all the product of these chains of connections. Right now, at this very moment, you’re helping to forge the chains that will link into future generations. You are a part of something amazing.

      Have you ever thought about what it means to be human? You share the same hopes and dreams and desires as every other human being in this world. Like everyone else, you want to explore, experience, and become something greater than you are today. Oh, your dreams might be for something specific, like a new car, a bigger home, or a wonderful spouse. Still, there is something similar about all the things you want from life. You want to be part of a world that changes. In your dreams, you want to be part of that change. You look ahead, and see something new and better for yourself.

      We all live such different lives, but isn’t it strange how people separated by so much seem to want the same things? A desert nomad looks to the sandy horizon and thinks about his future wife. A jungle savage deep in the Amazon rain forest hunts for branches to build his new home. A penthouse millionaire lifts his glass of scotch and gets hammered, while a Kalahari bushman lifts his bowl of fermented fruit pulp and gets hammered. Despite culture, technology, geography, and the distant reach of time itself, people are all the same. How is this possible?

      It’s possible because people are connected. No one in this world is ever truly alone. We all share this connection. The bond which chains us together is found in our souls. In a way, we all share a common, human soul. You see, all living beings have souls, but in most creatures the strength of their soul is limited by their bodies. Not every body is equal, and animals lack the combination of form and will necessary to express the true power of a divine soul. This is why animals have personalities, and why they can work together, but it’s also why they’ll never reach the level of understanding that we have. We, the human race, are the one species that can express the true power of the divine souls that flow through us. All souls come from the same, single source. It’s because of this one source that we’re all alike on the inside. We are bound together by the source of our souls. In this way, we share the same soul, and so we are all one people. You are connected.

      This connection makes you a part of the great human chain. You dreams and desires aren’t just shared by a few, but by millions, by billions of your fellow people. Your soul is a stream branching off from the divine river of souls shared by everyone. These celestial waters rise inside you as an irresistible tide, driving you to explore, experience, and learn about the world around you. Your soul gives you desires, and loves, and purpose. The same desires, loves, and purpose that is shared by every person in the world. You are never at rest. The currents in the stream of your soul drive you on, just like our souls drive us all. By the river of souls we are all connected. By history and our desires we are bound together in a great chain. You are not alone.

      You Were Created With a Purpose

      You were created for a purpose. Take a moment to think about all the things people have in common. We all dream, we all explore our world, we all imagine new worlds. We chase pleasures. We come together in friendship and community. We crack the mysteries of the universe. No matter who you are, or where you live, these are the things people do. We are connected by our common human desires, needs, and bonds. Why are we so similar, when all our lives are so different?

      If you think about it, the only possible conclusion is that we were created to serve a purpose. Our common hopes and dreams, our shared needs and desires, these must all have be given to us to serve that purpose. The drive to fulfill that purpose was branded upon our souls from the very start. This means that everyone living in the world today carries the brand of their creator. We explore, experience, and learn because our creator made us to do these things. Our purpose is rooted in exploring the world, experiencing all the world has to offer, and learning more about the world so that we might grow stronger and more powerful. All successful human endeavors spring from these desires.

      You carry the brand of your creator on your soul. Your body is the product of evolution, but your soul was granted to you by your creator and poured into your body as you grew from a baby to a child. In truth, what you are is a combination of a material body and the divine waters of your soul. All your life, you’ve felt the power of this fusion, even if you’ve never known what it is or why.

      Almost all living creatures have souls inside them. But humans are different from the rest in that there’s something special about our bodies that’s particularly friendly to the divine spirit. Our bodies act as channel for our souls, like a radio channels fine music. Because our bodies are so good at this, we can express the full power of the divine soul inside each of us. No other creature can do that, so no one else around can match our intelligence, creativity, and personality. Because we’re the only species with such power, it falls to us to fulfill the purpose of our creator. No one else can do it. What incredible faith our creator must have in us to trust us with such a vital task!

      We were made by our creator for the purpose of exploring the universe. The brand on our souls burns with the desire to explore and experience new things. It’s our nature to come together, work together, and dream together so we can create new ways to explore and experience. Even in our sleep, our dreams send us diving through new worlds and strange experiences that could never exist in real life. It is our way. Our purpose. We do this so that through us, by sharing our experiences, our creator can come to know this universe. We are an extension of the source of all souls, his eyes and ears in a place he can’t enter. You are an important part of your creator.
