      About The Author

      If you want expert advice you need to find someone with a lot of experience. I started building stairs when I was 16 years old, working with my father, who was a master carpenter.

      By the time I was 18 years old I was building stairs on my own and well on my way to becoming a master carpenter, like my father and his father.

      There were times when I was installing up to six sets of stairs a day. Difficult sets of stairs could take me all day to install, yet easy or straight stairs could almost be assembled in less than an hour. I worked long hours and studied hard to become one of the best stair builders in the area.

      I would imagine I spent at least 10 years of my life building stairs, day after day, week after week, year after year. I got to the point where I could practically build them in my sleep.

      I remember one time in my early 20s when I was sent to a specific job, to build an extremely difficult set of stairs, other stair builders were having problems with.

      Imagine this, when I was in my early 20s I looked like your average 18-year-old. Here was this thinly framed, scrawny young guy who definitely didn't fit the mold of your average construction worker.

      When I arrived at the job, there were a few other workers I had worked with before and one of them often referred to me as Stair Boy. It was early in the morning and we were doing what we do best, telling stories about our weekly adventures.

      After a few minutes the superintendent approached us and asked which one of us was the Stair Builder. They had already been through a few stair builders and couldn't afford any more problems.

      That's when my friend Bob, who often referred to me as Stair Boy, pointed to me and said there he is… there's Stair Boy.

      I thought the superintendent was going to explode with rage. What the hell do you mean, he's a boy. Seriously, quit kidding around… which one of you is the Stair Builder?

      My friend Bob was having a jolly old time, like usual, trying to make light of a situation someone else might be taking a little to seriously.

      That's when the construction foreman jumped in and said, he's not kidding that's him… that's Stair Boy.

      The superintendent couldn't believe his eyes and was preparing himself for another stair building nightmare. One of the reasons we got the job in the first place was because
