    Preface

This book is intended to help you on your journey of personal transformation. Although scientists tend to dismiss that which cannot be measured, the idea that we have a source of personal energy that influences our lives has been explored by various authors in a number of formats; including creating abundance, the Law of Attraction, Reiki, Pranic Healing, acupuncture and emotional freedom technique (EFT). My contribution to the discussion of personal energy will be a simplification and distillation of some of these concepts with the objective of providing you with some novel ways to create lasting change in your life based upon the conscious direction of your thoughts and actions.

As I explored the various approaches to personal energy, I likened this topic to John Godfrey Saxe's (1816-1887) poem The Blind Men and The Elephant

It was six men of Indostan

    To learning much inclined,

Who went to see the Elephant

(Though all of them were blind),

    That each by observation

    Might satisfy his mind.

    The First approached the Elephant,

    And happening to fall

Against his broad and sturdy side,

    At once began to bawl:

"God bless me! but the Elephant

    Is very like a WALL!"

The Second, feeling of the tusk,

Cried, "Ho, what have we here,

So very round and smooth and sharp?

    To me 'tis mighty clear

    This wonder of an Elephant

    Is very like a SPEAR!"

    The Third approached the animal,

    And happening to take

The squirming trunk within his hands,

    Thus boldly up and spake:

I see, quoth he, "the Elephant

    is very like a SNAKE!"

The Fourth reached out an eager hand,

    And felt about the knee

"What most this wondrous beast is like

    Is mighty plain," quoth he:

    "'Tis clear enough the Elephant

    Is very like a TREE!"

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,

    Said: "E'en the blindest man

    Can tell what this resembles most;

    Deny the fact who can,

    This marvel of an Elephant

    Is very like a FAN!"

The Sixth no sooner had begun

    About the beast to grope,

Than seizing on the swinging tail

    That fell within his scope,

I see, quote he, "the Elephant

    Is very like a ROPE!"

And so these men of Indostan

    Disputed loud and long,

    Each in his own opinion

    Exceeding stiff and strong,

Though each was partly in the right,

And all were in the wrong!

Much like the blind men of Indostan, I believe our current understanding in the realm of personal energy and the ability to direct intention is but a small part of a much greater whole that at this point in time, we can only imagine. So, if you want to put all this into a nice neat scientific theory, then this book isn’t worth your time. But, if you are willing to open your mind a bit and suspend judgment long enough to try some of these different approaches to bringing about incremental change and to also accept the unsettling chaos that accompanies change, then you are in for a fun experience.

    Introduction

Some of the information in the following pages may seem a bit strange and unconventional based upon your personal belief system. I will be presenting a wide range of ideas from a number of authors, so use those that resonate with you and leave the rest. Whenever possible, I also provide the source of adapted material and include additional information at the back of the book should you decide to explore some of the ideas in greater detail.

Most importantly, my desire is to have the process of change be an enjoyable experience for you. There are numerous exercises to help modify your thought process and to help strengthen your ability to focus your attention. You will also find several exercises to help you set a clear intention for directing the change you want to create in your life.

Personal transformation has been a constant theme throughout my life and creating lasting change has always been a challenge for me. I tend to do well with the new me for a bit; but slowly, I slip back into my old pattern of behavior and generate the same old results. Whether it's losing weight and keeping it off versus letting those pounds slip slowly back on my bones, or creating a new way to approach life's challenges; I have a full head of steam when I start the change process, but when I get into my familiar environment my old habits take over and the new behavior goes out the window.

That frustration with creating an enduring change led me to explore ways to open my mind and to bring about different behavior that I could adopt on a permanent basis. To this end, I am sharing some of the sources that have helped me to evolve as my life has unfolded personally and professionally.

It doesn’t matter which method you decide to use to bring about change in your life, because the important part of the mix is your strength of belief that the method will work and your true intention for making a change. The technique is just an outward expression of your personal energy as it is directed toward creating an external change in what you define as your reality.

Hopefully, you are able to begin this book with a willingness to perceive and receive yourself differently from this point forward. My goal is to help you will feel empowered as you work through the sense of chaos that change brings about by trying various exercises to help you release old patterns of thinking, adapt different behaviors and subsequently create lasting change in your life. Let’s begin your journey.

    Chapter 1

    Some Thoughts About

    The Body

    Major Systems of the Body

The body has a number of major systems including the endocrine (hormone), cardiovascular, immune, gastrointestinal, nervous, and autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system helps to regulate the other systems in the body and is also influenced by the mind. Within the autonomic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system is primarily directed at maintaining the internal equilibrium of your body according to Rick Hanson, Ph.D. and Richard Mendius, MD, authors of Buddha’s Brain. When you stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, you send calming, soothing, healing ripples throughout the body, brain and mind according to Hanson and Mendius. Further, there are a number of ways you can consciously stimulate the parasympathetic system.

    Parasympathetic System

Following are ways to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system adapted from Buddha’s Brain.

Train your body to relax automatically by relaxing your tongue, eyes and jaw muscles.

Scan other areas of your body and relax any that have tension.

Make a conscious effort to become aware of your body – the air going in and out of your lungs, the sensation of movement as you walk – follow a breath’s journey from beginning to end.

Imagine tension is draining out of your body and sinking down into the center of the earth.

Run warm water over your hands.

Breathe deeply – put your hand on your stomach a few inches below the rib cage and when you inhale, make your hand move out perpendicular to your chest. Breathe strongly so that the hand moves an inch or more with each breath.

Take as deep an inhalation breath as you can. Hold for a few seconds, exhale slowly while relaxing the body.

    Touch your lips.

You can also use imagery to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system according to Hanson and Mendius. If you feel stressed, imagine a peaceful place you have visited in the past. See yourself in that scene, feeling the joy and peace you experienced when you were there.

You can also create an imaginary refuge that you visit whenever you want to calm and center yourself. For instance, it could be a mountain vista with clouds floating by, or the peaceful image could be a sea shore with the waves gently lapping at your ankles as you wade through the water.

Breathe in a regular pattern. This will help decrease stress and improve your mood and immune system function. You could use a count of one, two, three, or four for the inhale and also for the exhale while imagining that you are breathing in and out through your heart area.

Continue breathing in the regular pattern and bring up a pleasant emotion like gratitude, kindness or love by thinking of a happy time or a person you love dearly. Imagine that this pleasant feeling is moving through your heart, riding on your breath.

    Brain Hemispheres

Dr. Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., author of Mindsight indicates the left and right brain hemispheres have different functions. The right side of the body is represented in the left hemisphere and the left side of the body is represented in the right hemisphere of the brain.

Also, the right hemisphere is more adept at the perception of our internal bodily state and specializes in close relationships, self-soothing, withdrawal and a turning inward away from novelty. The left hand is controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain, so babies often use their left hand for comforting. The right hemisphere also
