Concept
Mud runs are fun, exciting, thrilling, encouraging, attention-grabbing, and booming. Since the dawn of Tough Mudder's near perfect marketing platform, mud runs and obstacle course races (OCR) have attracted entrepreneurs from all over the country. And regardless of the increase in supply, the demand is still strong. Take a quick glance at Google Trends' chart on mud run searches, you'll notice that it's only increased on a yearly basis for the past 3 years. This is consistent growth, and is anticipated to only grow larger, as mud runs are still in an infant stage of growth.

Great idea! But don't think it's a walk in the park. This is not a get rich quick scheme, and it requires a lot of thought and work. But before we enter in the meat, let's start with the brainstorming. What is it that makes your mud run/OCR event different than the others? Are you serving a neglected area? Does your obstacle course have a theme, such as Run for your Lives (the original zombie run) or Hero Rush (firefighters)? Does your mud run serve those looking for an easier challenge or a harder challenge? Do you have never before seen obstacles?
Although still fresh, mud runs series are popping from every direction, and it is important, especially for a first year event, to offer something unique and original that can't be discovered from the other series. When I created my first mud run event, there were organizations already 3 years strong, developing a strong customer-allegiance and awareness. So instead of being a cookie cutter mud run, replicating obstacles and themes that had already been done, I was challenged to include a brand new theme that had never been seen before. The chosen theme ultimately helped with marketing, which allowed me to attract an impressive crowd. Not only did my event offer a unique twist, it was located in a neglected area. The chosen area has a strong running community. But the popular mud run events are always at least 2 hours away. So not only was I able to add a unique twist to my mud run, I was also able to target it to a neglected area.
Mud run series create very visually stimulating media. Pictures are embellished, as are videos and graphics. When brainstorming, put a lot of attention to your mud run name, logo, and tag line. You’ll want your name to be clever and memorable. Tough Mudder
is not only memorable, but it includes the phrase tough
which immediately helps the potential customers relate to the tough service they are providing. The logo is going to be your biggest kicker: will everyone remember it or forget about it?
So put a lot of brainstorming in what obstacle course you're going to piece together. This is your product, so it is very important to have a coherent game plan moving forward. To get more hands on experience, sign up for a mud run. They may be expensive, so you can always volunteer. Usually, they'll ask for about 6 hours in exchange for a free run through the course. Also, read online reviews. Travelete offers very detailed reviews for the races they've participated in. This will be very helpful when brainstorming your race, as you'll get to read what experienced mud runners are looking for.
Planning out the event details.
