Chapter 1
Introduction
The year is 1950; North Korea invades South Korea. The Great Depression is only a faint memory, and a gallon of gasoline costs eighteen cents. James Dean becomes well known from doing a Pepsi commercial. Most of the moms are home-bodies; only a few have taken up part-time work. No one locks their doors at night. Most homes only have the basic necessities; nothing worth stealing. This was the time of black and white television: only the well-to-do owned one. Kids had one change of school clothes: when they become worn; they become clothes to work and play in. There were no allowances: kids found pop bottles and sold them at the corner store, and bought candy with the money. One could cash in the 12 ounce pop bottle for 2 cents; 32 ounce bottle for 5 cents. This is a time when children spend most of the daylight hours out of the house and return only when mom calls, hunger calls or it gets too dark to see. There was a nine o'clock PM curfew when young kids must be off the streets. Here is a rendition of how a few close knit boys aged seven to ten spend their summer holiday time together.
