Chapter 1
Kate Murphy has returned to her home city of New York with her billionaire boyfriend: James De Vitis. As she embarks on building her independent publishing house – One for the Memories, James is struggling to figure out what to do next with his career after appointing his sister CEO of De Vitis Industries. Kate – now reunited with her lifelong best friend Jess – is out for a girl’s night dancing, and the one rule of girl’s night: no men allowed.
As she enters a Manhattan bar looking for her red haired friend, Kate sashays towards the bar; her dark navy stilettoes tapping, forgotten amongst the chatter and modern jazz playing softly in the background, her long blonde hair shimmering in the low lighting and her navy dress almost lost in the darkness – the gold detailing sparkling, highlighting her collarbones. She spies Jess waiting for her in a booth in the corner.
Kate waves to her friend; as Jess stands up she smiles, inviting Kate over and giving her a rib crushing hug – her short green halter dress drawing out the color of her eyes and contrasting with her auburn hair. The elegant young women grab two Long Island Tea’s and resume their occupancy in their corner booth.
So, how’s the publishing house coming?
Jess asks, mesmerized by the ice clinking as she slowly stirs her drink, One for the Memories isn’t it?
Not bad, I read an amazing manuscript a couple of weeks ago. I have been talking to the writer about his book and I am meeting with him tomorrow for lunch – some Italian place he recommended,
Kate responds excitedly. It is beautiful; a story about longing, love and the pain of a truly existential character.
It sounds intense.
Art is intense,
Kate replies off hand, staring into her drink.
The music switches tempo and the bar starts to come alive. As the place fills up, the two friends join the crowd to dance. Bodies brushing against each other, the temperature rising, the energy flowing through everyone – electric. Jess starts dancing with a lean and muscular piece of man meat when Kate breaks off for check her cell as James texts to ask her where she is; at which point she switches off her cell. When she rejoins her friend in the booth a tall, blonde hunk joining them with three drinks and hangs his arm over Jessica’s shoulder.
This is Sam. He’s a lawyer and a pretty good dancer,
Jess giggles tipsily as she introduces him and Kate. Kate sips her drink – frustrated at her friends disregard for the girl’s night rules but glad to see her happy. As the evening goes on Kate feels more and more like a third wheel and heads home leaving Jess and Sam dancing, wishing her friend Becky from Miami was with them.
I’ll call you tomorrow,
Kate says as she leaves, you can tell me all about Mr Tall, Blonde and Handsome.
What, you’ve seen another two hunks?
Jess jests, I’m not sure I could handle three of him!
Kate laughs and gets into a cab and turns her cell back on to find ten missed calls and bows her head, knowing she would be arguing with James again before the night is through.
Walking through the door of their penthouse apartment Kate hopes that James is already asleep but the sound of the TV roaring and the clatter of dishes in the kitchen her hopes are soon forgotten.
What time do you call this?
James asks, anger etched into his face. You said a couple of drinks yet you come home drunk?
It was a girl’s night, a couple of drinks on a girl’s night mean drinking, dancing and the ability to let your hair down and get a little too tipsy.
Kate tries not to provoke the argument any further. She had spent half the night watching Jess being almost eaten alive by a slobbering yeti and the other half paled in comparison as far as quality time with her best friend is concerned.
Whilst I sit at home, alone. I hope it was worth it,
