      Reading in English

      English-language teachers often advise their students to read as much as possible. Reading in English will help you see vocabulary in context, notice words that go together (word partnerships / collocations) and examine how grammar is used to construct English sentences.

      Reading the news

      News is easy to access. (See the list of recommended newspapers and websites at the end of this book.) News written by and for native-speakers is also a very good source of high-quality, contemporary English. News includes articles about every aspect of human life, such as politics, business, local and international events, as well as sport, music, fashion and much more. This book focuses on business and financial news. If you mainly use English as part of your job, this sort of news has lots of important vocabulary you need to talk about in your work. In addition, reading news about companies and financial markets will keep you up-to-date with what is going on in the business world.

      Understanding English headlines

      Headlines are advertisements for the articles in a newspaper or on a website. The tradition in Britain is to make headlines as short as possible. As a result, headlines are rarely complete sentences. Headline writers generally exclude articles (a, an, the) and auxiliary verbs (be and have). They rarely include punctuation such as commas. Headlines often contain words that are unusual in everyday conversation but are short or have a dramatic impact. Finally, British headlines frequently use idiomatic expressions.

      Using this book

      The first part of this book gives lots of examples of typical headlines from business and financial news stories. The complete meaning of each headline is explained. This explanation is a summary of the main point of the news story. The headlines are divided into seven categories:

      The people at the top – Stories about senior executives, their changes of jobs and their salaries.

      The business of politics – Stories about governments, regulators and the commercial world, and their interactions.

      Ups and downs – Stories about the performance of companies and markets, and the results of investments and speculation.

      Legal matters – Stories about court cases, prosecutions, scandals and their outcomes.

      New ideas – Stories about research, innovation, new products
