Acknowledgments
Writing this book has been an arduous task. Without the encouragement of the following people, I’m not quite sure if I could have completed the book.
I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to my wife Wendy and my children Ashley, Melanie, Stephen, and Martin for believing in me. I love you all.
I am very thankful to my God and my Savior Jesus Christ for the inspiration to write the poem I just want to be loved.
This culminated in the writing of this book.
My good friend Sheila Campbell Fowler who graciously took the time, edited my proof, and reconstructed the grammar and punctuation. This was appreciated more than you’ll ever know.
I would also like to thank Sheila’s mum for her kindness and beautiful words of encouragement. What a lovely person.
God has richly blessed me through each one of you. Thank you for your constant support.
Preface
After attending a meeting at a downtown mission in 1991, I came home and prayed asking God. Lord, how do people end up on the street?
After praying and careful thought, I really felt inspired to write the following poem. Over the years as I pondered over the poem, I thought, this poem would make a nice story as to why people actually end up on the street.

I just want to be loved (poem)
In this world we live in there's a lonely face out there, just looking for someone to love them to show them that we care.
There was a time when I was a child and I looked just like you, I had a brother, a sister, a mum and dad just like all of you.
One day my mum and dad were involved, in an accident in which they died, my brother and sister they looked at me and we all sat and cried.
We were ever so young and split apart, to different families we had to go, not knowing if we would see each other again, we were scattered to and fro'.
When I grew up I really didn't like, the foster home where I had grown, I decided one day that I should leave and go out on my own.
As I left home I used to think, of my mum and dad that I miss, the way they would cuddle and tuck me into bed and give me a goodnight kiss.
You know, loneliness can really get you down and fill your heart with fear, never ever knowing which way to turn it makes you shed a tear.
As things got worse my finances were low, different friends did I meet, not the kind that I had before, but the ones down on the street.
As I would talk to them alone, I found out that they had a similar break up with their families, which I found very sad.
My friends are gone now and I'm left alone, what now should I do, I feel that I have been abandoned with no one to talk to.
I've tried so hard to make this life, the best that I know how, but every time I turn a corner I feel so much let down.
Now, I'm a wanderer, a transient, wearing out my feet, walking the streets nowhere to stay, struggling to make ends meet.
Sometimes I wonder, if there's someone, when they have never ever seen, maybe it's hard for them to understand, to know how my life has been.
You know, I really want to be like you, I don't always want to roam, I would like to have a wife and family and have a nice warm home.
Right now, you may not think that's possible, when you look at me this way, but I can be educated and taught and be like you some day.
So please, don't look down when you walk by, I won't do you any harm, try and see me like you if my family were here and love me for who I am.
I may not be smart or as clever as you and I may not be very wise, but when you see me on the street, don't turn away, I could be an angel in disguise.
Well, I don't have much, but I've got Jesus in my heart, so I just keep looking above, hoping and praying, that maybe someday, I'll have somebody to love.
So please when you pass, just say hello and I'll say hello too, I just want to be loved in this lonely world, I just want to be like you.

Chapter 1
Goodnight children, love you
It was a Sunday evening in Glasgow Scotland as the sunset reflected on the water of the River Clyde. It was a damp cool evening in Glasgow as the rain was falling gently against the windows of the Maxwell home and smog from the nearby factories filled the air. Inside the home though, was a feeling of warmth, as the fireplace glowed and the coal embers sparkled in the fireplace. There was lots of noise and laughter in the house, as Mrs. Maxwell was getting her children ready for bed. She had two boys Henry (12) Jimmy (10) and one girl Sheila who was (8). It was a school day tomorrow and their mum always wanted them in bed early. She always believed that a good night’s rest and a good night’s sleep were very important for a good education. As their mum tucked them into bed, their dad came in to give them a hug and a goodnight kiss. After their dad had wished them all a goodnight, mum would then read them a bedtime story. When she had finished, she gave them all a big hug and a goodnight kiss. As she was leaving their rooms she said, Love you children, see you in the morning.
Next morning, as the sun came up early it was a glorious spring day as the sun rays were shining and glistening through the kitchen window. Henry was always up first. He was the oldest and enjoyed singing in the morning while making his breakfast. It bothered his siblings though, as all they wanted to do was to sleep some more. Sheila was the next one to arise. She would always take care of her dolls first, and then she would dress them, wash their faces, and brush their hair even before she got ready herself. Get up Jimmy,
called his mum. Jimmy loved his sleep, he felt very cozy lying in his bed, and he just didn’t want to get up. It was cool first thing in
