Success In the Child Care Business - Vincent Gabriel
Care
UNIT 1
How To Get Started
At the end of this unit you will know
• what are the pre-requisites for setting up a child care centre as announced by the licensing authority
• the entry strategies adopted by some of the players in the business
• the franchise as a starting model
Introduction
Your entry strategy depends on:
• Your experience of the business world and the child care business in particular.
• Amount of capital you have, as in this business initial expenses can be high.
• Your personal commitment to build a care business, that will grow big enough so that it can be a part of retirement planning.
• Your personal taste for risk taking.
Getting started
The child care centre is a little school system with many specialised areas and some non-specialised.
You start as an employee (either part-time or full time) in a child care centre.
You come in as a professional
• teacher
• nurse
• dietician
You come in as a non-specialist
• cook
• general staff member
If you intend to start your own child care centre you need to start with the ROLL formula.
Fig 2.1 The ROLL formula
Reading
There are whole book racks of business books at the bookshops and at the library.
Read the motivational books. Examples include:
• Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
• How To Win Friends Influence People by Dale Carnegie
• Sizzlemanship by Elmer Wheeler
• Seven Habits of Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
They are based on the experiences of highly successful people who owe their success to a high level of personal motivation, excellent interpersonal relationships and inspiring leadership.
The TV channels have many business programmes listen to the tips that the specialists invited give the viewers.
Observation
Learn through observation. Visit your competitors to see how they are doing. Find out what special features they have. Never be too proud to learn from the weakest and smallest competitor. After all even the mouse can make problems for the elephant.
Find out about market failures. Seek out the hard facts. Ask searching questions to find out why a child care went bust. Use the lessons of other people’s failures to examine your own strengths. Is yours a market that is at this very moment subject to a change in taste by consumers? Are you too dependent on a few customers? Are you dependent on a fancy or a whim that can suddenly change?
You need to be extra careful since consumers in Singapore accept new ideas, so much so that foreigners with deep pockets state that these consumers are at the leading edge of new trends
. As someone starting out, you need to be convinced about the acceptance of an idea before you plunge in.
Listening
You need to listen to your employee at the point of sale to tell you the reasons why people are buying or why they are not buying.
You need to listen to your support staff as they are with the children:
The helper who notices that a particular child has lost his appetite for food.
Listen: Is he/she ill?
The teacher who notices that a child does not understand basic instructions like Please sit
.
Listen: Is the child familiar with the English language?
Learning
You are specialist but the child care centre business requires a whole suite of expertise.
• You have to complete a regular certified training at the polytechnic to be licensed to teach.
• You have to get the NEA food handlers licence before you can work in the kitchen.
• You need to read up and keep abreast with learning methods. Children do not learn only from teachers. They learn from everybody.
• You need how to store food to prevent outbreaks of food poisoning.
• You need to know something about diets and their impact on the growing child. Feeding children is not about serving canned food, or eating porridge or eating deep fried food. You need to learn what your role is in the healthy, balanced growth of a child, entrusted in your care for 12 hours, for five days of the week or in some cases even 6 days a week.
