Chapter 1
Chapter 1
My mother was never particularly stable, one time she picked me up early from school to announce we were going to have a party. We went to the shops and bought balloons and ice cream and came home to start blowing them all up. With ABBA blasting through the thin walls of the apartment we began to dance and twirl. Spinning until my head felt so dizzy I fell down laughing. Turned down only when the neighbors with their crotchety ways banged on the door to shut it off or they’d call the police.
Never one to follow the rules, my mother rolled her eyes, would lean in close and whisper Normal children go to bed early and spend all day doing homework.
Bed times weren’t a thing at our house. My closet was filled with old dance costumes and a worn out pair of ballet shoes. Sometimes I felt sorry for the other kids with their packed lunches and polished shoes, they were missing out.
Dinners on good days were Nutella and fairy bread sandwiches eaten under our home made tents in the living room. There were fairy lights to keep the baddies away and stories about princes, princesses, and evil dragons. Always read from the same book I had since I was three. Stolen from the library after I cried for days when it was returned. Refusing to read anything else, the book was borrowed again and ‘lost.’
Other days she didn’t get out of bed and barely looked at me. The dishes would pile up in the sink and cold oatmeal was left in the fridge to be eaten out of the pot with a spoon.
My older brother Jeff lived with his Dad and only came to visit us on weekends. With his brand new t-shirts and gelled hair, he was forever making suggestions on how to keep things tidier. Sometimes he went as far as to bring washing up liquid and laundry baskets. Earnestly putting things in the baskets and showing me how to
