The Artists
There is a place in New York City called Greenwich Village. It is a village that is part of the big city. The village has many small streets and is full of old apartment blocks. It is a cheap place to live because the rent is not too high. Many poets and artists live there because they are poor. It is hard to make money as an artist.
It is easy to get lost in this village because there are so many small streets. Sometimes, people come and look for the artists who live there. They want the artists to pay them for paints and paper. Because they get lost, these people cannot find the artists. Then the artists don’t have to pay them.
Sue and Johnsy lived in this village. They were artists. They lived on the third floor of an old brick building. Sue was from Maine, and Johnsy was from California. Johnsy’s real name was Joanna, but her friends called her Johnsy.
Sue and Johnsy met at a restaurant in May. They started talking. They found
