About this ebook

During a military exercise on the Pacific skies, a fighter pilot of the Italian Navy loses contact with the aircraft carrier Cavour and finds himself forced to make an emergency landing on a mysterious deserted island not marked on maps. Trying to survive while waiting for rescue, his nights are tormented by terrifying nightmares in which he sees slimy tentacles that crush him mercilessly. Exploring the island, he locates the bodies of members of a scientific expedition that arrived to investigate the "bloop", a mysterious sound coming from the ocean depths. In the diaries of the researchers he reads of hallucinations and nightmares similar to his, but there is one mysterious word that recurs in all files: Cthulhu. It will not be long before the island awakens something that arrived on Earth billions of years ago... something waiting to claim its domain on the Universe.

Freely inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos of Howard Philips Lovecraft.

The island of evil - Gianluca Malato

    Messi

    Day 1

I've never seen a darker night as this. The shadows generated by the light stars in the sky surround me. In the sidereal mantle, the moon is the great absent.

Everything is permeated by a surreal, unnatural silence, not only deep but also dead. No sound of any kind, no night animal buzzing in the vegetation. Silence prevails and is the real owner of this forgotten place.

I've decided to write this diary as soon as night had fallen and the shadows got heavier. The few light of the fire, nearly reduced to a few embers, hardly enlightens the paper, but I had to do it at every cost. It's the kind of situation in which one must keep calm. If you lose control, you become worm food in no time.

My name is Stefano Girotti and I'm a lieutenant of the Italian Navy, Pilot of Aircraft AV-8B Harrier II Plus on Cavour Carrier.

Everything starts during a training mission at today's dawn. We are in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. The mission objective is to simulate a dog-fight offshore with limited equipment.

Air is still, in the great ocean.

My aircraft's engine sounds reliable on the ship's wreck, waking up my fighter after the night's numbness. Luca, my fellow pilot, is still a bit asleep, but he's ready to make my life a hell.

The mission consists of an interception of his by me, followed by a pursuit of a maximum duration of five minutes. The objective is to engage weapons against him before time elapses.

Luca, by his side, has to run away from me more agile as possible, avoiding making me aim at him.

The equipment is the standard for these kind of mission: 25 mm machine gun and air-to-air infrared missiles.

Luca takes off at first. I see his aircraft running on the carrier's wreck, then taking off among the clouds.

Three minutes later, I'm allowed to take off too. I release the brakes, feel the engine's acceleration and the recoil of the ski-jump pushing my aircraft higher and I finally take off.

The sky is clear and the sun has already risen. I don't take too much time to identify my fellow on the radar and point towards him.

As soon as he sees me, Luca starts the usual evasive maneuvers that make him one of the best NATO pilots.

He tries to escape from me with narrow veers, but I don't want to make him run away.

We run after each other for two minutes, respecting the dog-fight maneuvers expected in these cases.

A four G veer presses me on the seat. I feel my body much heavier because of the centrifugal acceleration and I hold my breath for the struggle, but it's worth it.

Luca's aircraft silhouette enters the HUD screen and I finally relax.

The mission is over and I win.

I have beaten you, big boy I joke on radio.

Yes, but only this time Luca answers. Don't get used to it.

You are becoming less good. Maybe you should go back to America, to Marines. Maybe you can still meet their standards.

Asshole. At least admit that the last veer has dropped your stomach under your shoes.

Maybe yours. Mine fell inside the helmet.

Harmless military puffery. After a mission's adrenaline, they are very important to dampen stress.

We receive the order to come back from the carrier.

Luca gives full throttle and he surpasses me. He will land at first, then I'll arrive later.

The ocean flows under me at three hundred twenty knots and, in a moment, I'm alone.

The carrier's signal guides me through the right direction, but something strange suddenly happens.

All the instrumentation switches on and off repeatedly, the screens blink like crazy, the light alternate intermittent. Even the radar alarm buzzes, as an enemy aircraft was aiming at me.

This sound and light concerto lasts for a while, then everything turns down in a flash just as it started.

The HUD, the sensors, the monitors. Everything is dramatically off.

I don't easily get concerned. We are trained to face situations like these. In the USA, they have taught me that Harrier is an excellent machine, but after
