Dreams
Serena woke up with a start. Her head throbbed - that dream had felt so real. Her heart pounded as she tried to wash away images of being chased...the large winged reptile behind her...she could smell the smoke from its fiery breath on her. The red slit-like eyes and its thin forked tongue, so, so close to lancing her. Sweat dotted her forehead and rolled down the side of her cheek. Her heart palpitated as if she had truly been running.
She shook her head and willed herself to calm down. She did not want to be late for school. She hated detention, hated the long talks her parents would have with her if they found out. Which they somehow always did. We must do our very best to follow the rules, they would say. But lately she often woke up late, and ended up racing to school on her bike, often missing the bell by five minutes or so.
It’s those dreams. They're always there nowadays.
The other day she had dreamt she was flying through a field. The grass was a strange grey, she remembered. She had been flying not too far off from the ground, because she remembered feeling the grass touch her front. She tried to remember what else she saw, or how it was that she managed to fly, but the dream escaped her. Oh well, I'm sure I'll have another dream tonight anyway.
Classes dragged on and on. They were reading Shakespeare and Mr. Everett's low, droning voice was quickly putting everyone to sleep. Mr. Everett didn’t seem to notice the girls in the back passing notes, or maybe he didn't care. Her mind drifted away from The Tempest and she started to rub her back, which was killing her. She could not remember what she had done recently that could have caused it to hurt. Her schoolbag wasn’t even heavy. She made a mental note to do some stretching exercises before swimming later. The long hour finally ended and she raced off.
She always looked forward to her swimming classes. Nothing could make her happy the way the water did. She was born to swim. The water took away her backache, and instilled in her a focus she could never seem to develop for school. She had a knack for all things athletic. She had enrolled in tae kwon do and was now a brown belt. Track and field was one of her strengths as well. Now, if only some of that talent allowed her to write poetry for her literature assignment due next week....
As the day began to end, she could feel her nervousness build up inside her. There were nights when she did not have any dreams, but lately those nights were few and far in between. She
