What is Karma?

Karma is a Sanskrit word that means action, and encompasses the results of the action.

For every action there will always be a reaction. Your thoughts and actions are powerful. They carry energy. They are like an echo.

Karma is the law of moral causation, or cause and effect, which is based upon the idea that nothing happens by accident to a person. Fundamental to both Hinduism and Buddhism, there are differing view on exactly how karma works. Regarded as a fundamental law of nature that is automatic and mechanical.

The word karma refers primarily to bad karma - that which is accumulated as a result of wrong actions. Bad karma binds a person's soul (atman) to the cycle of rebirth (samsara) and leads to misfortune in this life and poor conditions in the next. The moral energy of a particular moral act bears fruit automatically in the next life, manifested in one's class, disposition, and character.

Is Karma Real?

The karma is both the initial action and the eventual result, and the whole process of cause and effect itself. From this, we can understand the relationship of cause and effect in the present. Those in sports and music will get good results if they exercise and practice. This is a simple example of cause and effect in one's present life. The principle of karma in Buddhism goes beyond one's present life. In Buddhism, results that manifest in one's present life can be due to behavior in past lives. This principle also extends into the future.

For instance, Buddhists view karma as a way to explain why one person is born into luxury and another is homeless or why one man is a genius and another has severe mental challenges. According to the law of karma, none of these inequalities is accidental, but is the result of something the person did either in this or a past life for which he or she is being punished or rewarded.

Indian religions have a slightly different view of karma, such as those who believe that karma cannot be fate for humans act with free will, thus creating their own destiny. In other words, if one sows goodness, they will reap goodness; if they sow evil, they will reap evil. They believe good or bad actions create impressions or tendencies in the mind, which will come to fruition in some further action.

Changing your Karma – is that possible?

It is not something that is imposed by God or a god as a system of punishment or reward, nor something that the gods can interfere with. If one hurts another, the action vanishes when the event is over, but the physical and emotional consequences remain. Karma is action that creates an influence over future events in one's life. Karma is created by three categories of action: thoughts, words, and deeds, which include all the activities in life. So by analyzing the early moments of your day we can determine some karmic paths from your thoughts and feelings shape the world within you. Your words and actions shape the world around you. You are constantly changing your world, little by little.
