About The Author

Now writing under the pen-name of HARUN YAHYA, Adnan Oktar was born in Ankara in 1956. Having completed his primary and secondary education in Ankara, he studied fine arts at Istanbul's Mimar Sinan University and philosophy at Istanbul University. Since the 1980s, he has published many books on political, scientific, and faith-related issues. Harun Yahya is well-known as the author of important works disclosing the imposture of evolutionists, their invalid claims, and the dark liaisons between Darwinism and such bloody ideologies as fascism and communism.

Harun Yahya's works, translated into 73 different languages, constitute a collection for a total of more than 55,000 pages with 40,000 illustrations.

His pen-name is a composite of the names Harun (Aaron) and Yahya (John), in memory of the two esteemed Prophets who fought against their peoples' lack of faith. The Prophet's seal on his books' covers is symbolic and is linked to their contents. It represents the Qur'an (the Final Scripture) and Prophet Muhammad (saas), last of the prophets. Under the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah (teachings of the Prophet [saas]), the author makes it his purpose to disprove each fundamental tenet of irreligious ideologies and to have the last word, so as to completely silence the objections raised against religion. He uses the seal of the final Prophet (saas), who attained ultimate wisdom and moral perfection, as a sign of his intention to offer the last word.

All of Harun Yahya's works share one single goal: to convey the Qur'an's message, encourage readers to consider basic faith-related issues such as Allah's existence and unity and the Hereafter; and to expose irreligious systems' feeble foundations and perverted ideologies.

It is impossible for books devised to emphasize the author's literary power rather than the noble goal of saving people from loss of faith, to have such a great effect. Those who doubt this can readily see that the sole aim of Harun Yahya's books is to overcome disbelief and to disseminate the Qur'an's moral values. One point should be kept in mind: The main reason for the continuing cruelty, conflict, and other ordeals endured by the vast majority of people is the ideological prevalence of disbelief. This can be ended only with the ideological defeat of disbelief and by conveying the wonders of creation and Qur'anic morality so that people can live by it. Considering the state of the world today, leading into a downward spiral of violence, corruption and conflict, clearly this service must be provided speedily and effectively, or it may be too late.

•A special chapter is assigned to the collapse of the theory of evolution because this theory constitutes the basis of all anti-spiritual philosophies. Since Darwinism rejects the fact of creation—and therefore, Allah's existence—over the last 150 years it has caused many people to abandon their faith or fall into doubt. It is therefore an imperative service, a very important duty to show everyone that this theory is a deception. Since some readers may find the opportunity to read only one of our books, we think it appropriate to devote a chapter to summarize this subject.

Foreword

Darwinist ideology is based on the imposition of a preconception on uninformed people. It makes use of society’s general lack of knowledge on scientific matters. The method employed consists of abundant repetition, mass hypnosis and the literal casting of a magic spell.

The effect of this Darwinist mass hypnosis, based on lies and deception, has swamped almost the entire world; so much so that in the 20th century the great majority of people were turned into enthusiastic proponents of evolution, about which they actually knew nothing at all. Most of them did not even know what they were supporting. They simply fell under the influence of pictures of series of mythical ape-men gradually beginning to walk upright or reports along the lines of our forebearer was a worm that appeared in the daily papers. Such indoctrination made this mass hypnosis successful. And because of that false success, almost nobody ever thought to enquire, Is there any supporting scientific evidence? And indeed there was no supporting scientific evidence for Darwinists to point to. For the people subjected to this indoctrination, evolution has become a false theory that they have encountered in almost every area of life and came across in the major dailies and magazine, a spurious theory that was officially taught in schools and protected and encouraged by state institutions in many countries and espoused by world-famous scientists. Despite being an obvious fraud, it was literally imposed as the truth through indoctrination, hypnotism and deception.

The hypnosis was disseminated through this Darwinist propaganda in which many groups were involved together, to the extent that some people became the unwitting proponents of an exceedingly dangerous theory that has inflicted terrible disasters on the world and that constituted the foundation of all the repressive systems that drowned the 20th century in blood. But that age has now come to an end, because a large number of works, and particularly the Atlas of Creation, which you are now holding, has revealed that science has totally demolished evolution.

In this fourth volume of the Atlas of Creation, in addition to fossil specimens dating back hundreds of millions of years that refute the theory of evolution and prove the fact of creation, you will also see scientific evidence showing how Darwinists misused science to carry out their mass hypnosis.

The book you are holding uses incontrovertible scientific evidence to prove that Darwinism is a fraud and it shows, again with incontrovertible evidence, that more than 350 million fossils completely refute evolution and declares to the entire world that not even a single protein can ever come into being by chance. This book exposes the mendacity and the audacity of the Darwinist dictatorship that has imposed the theory of evolution on the world using false evidence. It contains the scientific evidence that refutes Darwinism. Demagoguery will no longer gain the Darwinists anything.

Darwinism is not science

With the distribution in Europe of the first three volumes of the Atlas of Creation, European societies subjected to Darwinist and materialist indoctrination for the previous century and a half for the first time had the opportunity to see the true facts. This work, which revealed that the theory of evolution is of no scientific value and is merely kept propped up for ideological reasons, has led to a major change of belief in Europe. Polls in different countries have revealed a major decline in the numbers of people believing in Darwinism, and that belief in creation has now begun to predominate in Europe.

Yet despite all the scientific evidence against it, Darwinism is still taught in schools, and particularly in universities, as if it were a scientific fact. It is espoused as an official ideology of state in many countries of the world and taught on a compulsory basis. This shows that the scientific struggle against Darwinism needs to be accelerated on a daily basis and that all societies need to be made aware of the Darwinist deception.

The way to enhance all believers’ enthusiasm and determination on this subject is to show that the theory of evolution is a fraud and that science utterly rejects evolution, to reveal the sufferings, scourges and tribulations inflicted by Darwinism on the whole world, and to demonstrate that Darwinist and materialist beliefs lie at the root of all wars, genocide, slaughter, terror, oppression, violence and unhappiness and of the factors that most trouble society, from rising crime rates to increased levels of suicide.

People who lack sufficient knowledge of Darwinism, or who have not studied the subject in detail, may not be aware of what a grave danger Darwinism is. They may not be able to see how the theory of evolution underlies the social problems and moral degeneration that oppresses and distresses people today. Ignorance of this fact represents a major threat.

Since they are unaware of the harm that Darwinist thinking has inflicted on mankind over the last century and a half or so, these people are generally unable to grasp how vitally important the intellectual struggle against Darwinism is. But the fact remains that Darwinist ideology strives to deny the existence of Allah and the fact of creation (surely Allah is beyond that). It seeks to make people forget that they have a responsibility to our Lord. It inculcates the fraudulent idea that human beings are supposedly the work of blind chance and encourages them to live by the law of the jungle. It therefore gives rise to societies made up of people that are unaware of their responsibilities to Allah and the reason for their presence in this world, that think solely of their own self-interest, and that live in a state of ruthlessness, disloyalty, lovelessness, ingratitude and cruelty.

Darwinism, the falsehood that the immaculate equilibrium in the universe and all life came into being by chance, also represents the backbone of materialism. This unscientific and pernicious belief regards human beings as entities with no souls or responsibility to Allah and as merely a slightly more advanced species of animal. It maintains that relationships between people should be ruthless, selfish and based on conflict, rather than loving, compassionate and affectionate. Therefore, conflict is inevitable wherever the ideological structure of Darwinism prevails because this dangerous ideology regards such feelings as compassion, love, sympathy, loyalty and respect as elements that supposedly hold back the evolutionary process and that therefore need to be eradicated.

The error of underestimating the scientific struggle against Darwinism

It is a grave error to imagine that Darwinism, propped up for ideological reasons even though it has collapsed scientifically, is harmless. The idea that life formed by chance, which goes back to the ancient Sumerians, consists of a failed theory that seeks to account for the origin of life in purely materialistic terms. This pagan religion, the real aim of which is to deny the existence of a Creator (surely Almighty Allah is beyond that), is a trigger that seeks to turn people away from belief in Allah, indoctrinates them with the idea that they are ruthless entities and leads to the shedding of the blood of the innocent. This bloody impact of Darwinism still persists today, and acts of terror and violence all over the world are nourished by this perverse theory. Therefore, the intellectual struggle to be waged against Darwinism is of the most vital importance if peace is to be brought to society and the moral values of the Qur’an are to reign over the world.

Darwinism is officially supported by many states

Almost all the states of the world have adopted Darwinism as an official ideology and support this perverse ideology by a variety of means. In addition to encouraging atheism, this ideology has also officially banned discussion of belief in Allah. Professors who do not advocate Darwinism are suddenly removed from their posts and are unable to find positions in almost any other institution. Almost the entire world is under the dominion of the Darwinist dictatorship. It is literally impossible for someone who does not support the theory of evolution to acquire the title of scientist. A Darwinist professor will select the assistant he appoints from among Darwinist and materialist applicants and will never hire someone who is not a Darwinist. Indeed, the professor will seek to have them removed from the university entirely.

But despite all these facts, some people still fail to properly grasp the importance of anti-Darwinist activities and do not treat them sufficiently seriously. These people incorrectly regard it as impossible for a communistic, materialistic and irreligious system to develop in Muslim societies and thus ignore the danger inherent in allowing Darwinist ideologies to spread. But this is a serious error. The fate of peoples that have fallen into this error once again emphasizes the importance of anti-Darwinist, anti-materialist activities.

The prophets destroyed all idols erected against belief in Allah

History shows that the prophets never turned a blind eye to the idols in their communities. For example, the Prophet Abraham (pbuh) smashed the idols to stop his people from worshipping them. Allah reveals this as follows in the Qur’an:

He broke them in pieces, except for the biggest one, so that they would have it to consult! They said, ‘Who has done this to our gods? (Qur’an, 21:58-59)

They said, ‘Did you do this to our gods, Abraham?’ He said, ‘No, this one, the biggest of them, did it. Ask them if they are able to speak!’ They consulted among themselves and said, ‘It is you yourselves who are wrongdoers.’ But then they relapsed back into their disbelief: ‘You know full well these idols cannot talk.’ He said, ‘Do you then worship, instead of Allah, what cannot help or harm you in any way?ऀShame on you and what you worship besides Allah! Will you not use your intellect?’ (Qur’an, 21:62-67)

As the above verses show, the prophet Abraham (pbuh) did not just shatter the idols. He chose a very clever way of doing so that would allow the people to realize that their idols had no power. By setting their consciences in motion, he allowed them to think in a direction that they had perhaps never gone down before.

In the same way, the Prophet Moses (pbuh) also smashed the idols of his people who again fell under the influence of their own perverse beliefs at a time when he was away from them. The Prophet Moses (pbuh) burned the golden calf, the idol of his tribe, and then scattered its ashes into the sea. In this way, the Prophet Moses (pbuh) made sure that his people would never again be able to worship their idols. Allah reveals this as follows in the Qur’an:

He [Moses] said, ‘What do you think you were doing, Samaritan?’ He said, ‘I saw what they did not see. So I gathered up a handful from the Messenger’s footprints and threw it in. That is what my inner self urged me to do.’ He said, ‘Go! In the world you will have to say, Untouchable! And you have an appointment which you will not fail to keep. Look at your god to which you devoted so much time. We will burn it up and then scatter it as dust into the sea. Your god is Allah alone, there is no god but Him. He encompasses all things in His knowledge.’ (Qur’an, 20:95-98)

Our Prophet (saas) also warned his people against their idols and told them that these were quite powerless. Almighty Allah describes the situation thus in the Qur’an:

Have you really considered al-Lat and al-‘Uzza and Manat, the third, the other one? (Qur’an, 53:19-20)

They are nothing but names which you yourselves have given, you and your forefathers. ऀAllah has sent down no authority for them. They are following nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire. And that when guidance has reached them from their Lord! (Qur’an, 53:23)

As can be seen from these verses, what a believer has to do in order for the moral values of Islam to spread is first to intellectually destroy the false gods adopted by a community, definitively and irrevocably. The idol that today represents the foundation of the global threat of irreligiousness is the Darwinist, materialist ideology. It must not be forgotten that closing one’s eyes in the dark does not relieve that darkness. Pretending the darkness does not exist does not do away with it. In order to eliminate the darkness, one has to turn on the light. The light that needs to be lit now is an intensive anti-Darwinist, anti-materialist intellectual struggle.

The Atlas of Creation is an intellectual blow to the greatest idols of our age

The fourth volume of the Atlas of Creation you are holding is the continuation of a major scientific blow to Darwinist, materialist ideology, because this work reveals fossils that were carefully kept hidden away by Darwinists and shows everyone that evolution never happened. Every one of the fossils in this book declares that living things never underwent evolution. More than 350 million fossils, of which we can only include a very small number of specimens here, is concrete evidence that the evolutionary process is a myth, a mere fantasy. Hundreds of millions of fossils show that life forms never changed, that they never went through intermediate stages and they emerged in a single moment, with all their body parts. Hundreds of millions of fossils pointing to creation respond not one single transitional form fossil exists. The meaning of this is clear; evolution does not exist, but rather it is creation that is a scientific fact. 3.9-million-year-old living marvels that refute the theory of evolution

The oldest known fossils belong to bacteria that lived some 3.9 billion years ago. That is why evolutionists have claimed that the first single-celled bacterium emerged spontaneously, by chance, from inanimate matter. In order to be able to corroborate this myth, Darwinists refer to the first bacterium in question as a simple organism. In their eyes, this life form with supposedly simple characteristics, must have been influenced at random by various environmental circumstances and conditions and have undergone changes, always positive, and must have acquired various miraculous characteristics – such as producing its own nutrients and starting to replicate by mitosis from meiosis – again all by chance. But in order for this to transpire that unconscious bacterium would have to go even further and start thinking, it would have to have made various decisions and established colonies. It would also have to be capable of biochemical communications with other bacteria and eventually become the complex life form it is now. This illogical and irrational claim made by Darwinists was widely accepted due to the ignorance of the time, when science had not made much progress, and was heralded as a scientific fact. But this has all changed in the 21st century.

The major scientific advances taking place today have totally undermined the idea of a primitive first bacterium because current research in the light of advanced technology has revealed that these, the smallest life forms on earth, are not at all simple, as Darwinists maintain, that they have highly important and complex attributes, and that they could only have been created in a single moment by a sublime Mind and with an incomparable Knowledge. The fact revealed by science is that Allah has created bacteria, like all other living things.

Bacteria are essential for life on earth

A chemical laboratory made up of elements we cannot see with the naked eye, that works non-stop and supports our survival, is present in all of nature. The bacteria we are considering in this chapter, each one of which is a miracle of creation, are expert chemists that make use of nature as a laboratory. A great many of the features of bacteria are still unknown because the size of these life forms, around 0.001 millimeters (3.93700787 × 10-5 inches), generally makes it impossible to study their internal structures properly. However, the available data still describe the systems in these life forms to us.

Bacteria are not primitive, as evolutionists like to claim. On the contrary, they possess complex systems that prove that they could not have come into being through a gradual process of evolution. There are many species of bacteria in nature, all with different characteristics.

Cyanobacteria represent the most complex group of bacteria, which exhibit these different features. However, this description is still far from describing cyanobacteria’s characteristics and the wonderful functions they perform. Cyanobacteria possess very special cellular architectures and complex intra-cellular communications systems.

Even 3.9 billion years ago, cyanobacteria were marvelous and fully equipped life forms capable of making photosynthesis, carrying out nitrogen fixation (nitrogen that cannot be used in a gaseous form assuming the form of usable compounds), capable of movement without the bacterial whip (flagella) and using a string of proteins in order to make such motion possible.

The glorious characteristics of cyanobacteria that refute evolution

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are the oldest known prokaryotes, single-celled organisms, obtaining their energy through photosynthesis.1 These life forms can manufacture the carbon they use for processes within the cell from the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. At the same time, they are able to fix nitrogen gas in molecular form. The fact that these processes take place in the same place requires careful reflection and totally refutes the evolutionists idea that these life forms are primitive.

The enzyme nitrogenase, which is responsible for nitrogen fixation, is exceedingly sensitive to oxygen. For that reason, nitrogen fixation and the process of photosynthesis, which requires oxygen, should not be able to take place at the same time in cyanobacteria cells. In order to overcome this difficulty, the filaments in some cyanobacteria restrict the nitrogen fixation process with a special kind of cell known as heterocysts.

With their unique structure, heterocyst cells enable these two incompatible processes to be performed by the cyanobacteria.

In order to restrict the entry of oxygen, heterocyst cells are covered with a special sheath containing glycolipid and polysaccharide, a protective homogeneous envelope. A layer four nanometers thick develops through the interaction of waterproof chains, and this restricts the permeability of dissolved substances. Heterocysts have four separate membranes consisting of double-layer lipids, and these have different structures and functions.

In this way, carbon dioxide fixing through photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation in an oxygen-free environment, which cannot happen at the same time, are separated from one another, and cyanobacteria are able to discharge their functions.

Cyanobacteria fossils: an insoluble dilemma for evolutionists

Rock strata in the Apex Chert region of Australia contain cyanobacteria fossils, or stromatolites (stromatoliths), dating back 3.9 billion years.

Stromatolites form in shallow water with the accumulation and freezing of the sediment of micro-organisms such as cyanobacteria. Stromatolites began forming in the Precambrian Period and are formed by calcium carbonate particles (limestone) carried by the sea adhering to the filaments formed by blue-green algae.2 These structures are rich in chlorophyll. Over the geological ages they formed in globes or domes of various sized immediately beneath the surface of the sea.

Some of the characteristics of cyanobacteria, those marvelous micro-organisms, that refute the claim of the theory of evolution that life forms came into beings by chance, may be summarized as follows:

The giant activities of cyanobacteria, those marvelous micro-organisms:

• Cyanobacteria by themselves produce 30% of the Earth’s annual amount of oxygen3; that figure is equivalent to the amount produced by all the green plants on Earth.

• These bacteria are very small in size, but their production is enormous. There are more than 100 of them in a liter of water, and they account for 10% to 20% of the productivity of the oceans. Despite being invisible, they predominate over a large part of the Earth.

• This form of bacterium is capable of performing very different processes (such as photosynthesis, nitrogen fixation (the process whereby nitrogen is turned into a form usable by living things) and respiration, within a single cell. This requires a matchless cell membrane system, as outlined above. For example, the bacteria need an oxygen-free environment for nitrogen fixation, but an oxygen-rich environment for all the other processes, and these require very different cell membranes. This architecture makes cyanobacteria one of the most complex members of the bacterial kingdom.4

• In 1980, cyanobacteria were observed to possess a circadian clock.5 A circadian clock is the automatic regulation of the body according to its external environment, seen in multi-celled organisms. Cyanobacteria have been observed to engage in photosynthesis and respiration by absorbing oxygen into their cells for 12 hours a day, while they perform nitrogen fixation for the other 12 hours.

• Cyanobacteria are able to move in water without using flagellae (the bacterial whip). The secret behind the way these organisms can move without using any body part has still not been adequately explained, despite ongoing research for the last 20 years. The hexagonal layer known as the S layer, which makes up the most external layer of the cell, is three-dimensional and symmetrical. This layer is thought to play a role in cell movement. Because when the gene swm6, which expresses that symmetry, is subjected to mutation, the cell has been observed to be unable to move.6

• Cyanobacteria are capable of manufacturing anticarcinogenic, antiviral and UV-protective substances. These characteristics mean they are used in genetic studies intended to benefit human beings. For example, the antiviral protein Cyaniovirin-N produced by the Cyanobacterium species Nostoc ellipsosporum neutralizes the HIV virus. This protein possesses the ability to adhere to the oligosaccharide structures that enable the HIV virus to attach to the cells. Studies on this subject are still being planned.7

Layers gradually form as calcium carbonate (limestone) builds up on the fibers of growing bacteria. Bacteria initiate this build-up by making photosynthesis using carbon dioxide from the water around.

This process is repeated over and over again, and sedimentary layers form. The process is still continuing today.

Fossil stromatolites are colonies of cyanobacteria, the oldest known organisms. The processes that these organisms carry out in their micro-bodies, too small to be seen with the naked eye, exhibit a perfection that today’s advanced technology is nowhere near approaching. The structures known as thylakoids they use for photosynthesis are located within the folds of the cell membrane. Thylakoids have special antennae known as phycobilisomes that collect light for photosystems. It is clear that such an architecture is not at all primitive.

Considering both their structures and the processes they perform, these organisms, which date back 3.9 billion years, are not at all primitive, but have been highly complex ever since the moment they were first created.

This 2.4-billion-year Precambrian fossil stromatolite possesses striking colors and patterns. This species’ red color, known as Tiger iron, is the result of jasper and black hematite (mineral iron). The contrasting bands of color form a striking pattern. It is generally used in jewelry and for decoration. Tiger iron essentially consists of silicon dioxide and is colored by iron oxide. 100

Cyanobacteria’s moving mechanism involves highly detailed and unique processes.

In the daytime, cyanobacteria remain close to the surface for photosynthesis, and at night they sink to the bottom to gather nutrients. They use gas vacuoles (empty spaces) to do this and constantly change their locations in the water.

In contrast to other bacteria, cyanobacteria employ a slow glide in order to move; but since they have no whips, the mechanisms by which these organisms move is still not fully understood.

Complex proteins play a role in the slow, gliding motion that enables the cells to change location, but the structure of the engine and how the chemical compounds work is still a mystery. Nonetheless this mechanism has remained unchanged for billions of years, and has never altered.

Human beings and animals possess no mechanism allowing them to make direct use of solar energy. That energy can only be obtained by being synthesized as a result of the process of photosynthesis performed by green plants and micro-organisms. Cyanobacteria species that make photosynthesis produce more than half the oxygen in the atmosphere. The energy that these organisms manufacture with solar energy is stored in the form of simple sugars. This sugar is needed for the biochemical reactions essential for the survival and growth of living things on Earth, and also for respiration.

As well as oxygen and carbon dioxide, living things also need nitrogen (N2) in order to survive. Nitrogen represents one of the fundamental building blocks in the living body, especially in the structure of nucleic acids, proteins and vitamins. The Earth's atmosphere consists of approximately 78% nitrogen. However, despite their needing it, living things cannot absorb this nitrogen in the air into their bodies. This gas has to be converted in some way into a form that living things can make use of and then recycled back into the atmosphere if it is not to run out. That need is again met by microscopic bacteria.

The living things that must first absorb nitrogen from the air are plants. Plants cannot use nitrogen in gas form. Nitrogen is converted by nitrite bacteria into nitrite, and nitrate bacteria then convert that nitrite into nitrate, a form that plants can use.

In carrying out the nitrogen cycle, the bacteria that evolutionists describe as simple actually function like living chemical laboratories, as with photosynthesis, and have been performing complex chemical reactions, beyond the comprehension of anyone without a close knowledge of chemistry, since the day they were first created.

One in every ten cells in the filament-like cyanobacteria in the picture above is known as a heterocyst, and it is these cells, which are completely insulated from oxygen, that perform the task of fixing nitrogen.

The stromatolite fossil record is exceedingly rich, and they have been around in various environments on Earth for some four billion years. They were initially discovered in Shark Bay, Australia in 1956. They are also found in the Bahamas, the Indian Ocean, Africa and the USA.

Stromatolites have a bacteria population of 3 billion per square meter. When these combine with sediments and organic materials and gradually grow to 10 million times their own size, they build structures up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in size. Since they grow very slowly, a one meter stromatolite will be around 2,000 years old.8

The theory of evolution has no meaningful answer to the highly esthetic appearance and symmetry in the architecture of these living things. It is impossible for this symmetry and flawless system to come about by chance.

The flawlessness in these tiny organisms clearly shows the creation of our Almighty Lord, the sublime Creator.

Bacteria are not only found in the seas or water sources. They are also agents present in all living things, from the human body to termites living underground to the root hairs on a plant. These organisms have spread everywhere on Earth and have been discharging their functions with the same perfection for billions of years. All this of course points to one single truth: Creation.

The proponents of the theory of evolution are in fact perfectly well aware that these organisms are not simple at all. That is why they are in a constant state of difficulty and doubt when they try to describe the characteristics and mechanisms possessed by the perfect organisms in question. Evolution is an unscientific theory unable even to account for the existence of a micro-organism.

The science and technology that have made such advances in the 21st century have revealed, under the scanning electron microscope, a brand new world that again refutes the theory of evolution. Yet another has been added to the increasingly lengthy list of questions for Darwinists about life on Earth. Every piece of research, every new finding, every characteristic we encounter in living things, is a means whereby we can discover the flawless artistry created by Allah in invisible things and whereby we can properly appreciate it.

What Is a complex system?

Many of the organs that appeared in Cambrian life forms, such as eyes, antennae, limbs, mouth and gut are all complex systems that exhibit a number of basic features.

A complex system can be summarized as follows:

A complex system arises from a large number of smaller components that are all interrelated to one another. At the same time, this system is in a constant exchange and interface with surrounding structures. It is not enough for a single component to be operating in order for the complex system to function. All of its components need to work together at the same time, in harmony, and in a flawless manner.

The eye is an example of one such complex structure, consisting of a large number of components, each of which is linked to other equally complex structures. Individually, the substructures of the eye cannot make vision possible. In order for the eye to see, all the components have to perform their own individual functions together, and flawlessly.

The complexity encapsulated within any single eye manifests itself similarly in a single cell of a living thing, or even at the fundamental level of a single protein within that cell. This interrelated sophistication is the greatest obstacle facing the Darwinist claim of small, random changes as an explanation for the development of species. As we know, random effects are almost always destructive. Any random mutation affecting a complex system will cause the collapse of that system, even if it affects only one of its components. Therefore, a mutation in the optic nerve will cause blindness in the eye.

Excessive current—as in a power surge—will cause damage to a radio. No one can imagine that a power surge could turn that radio into a television. Therefore, any random effect impacting on the eye, a structure far more complex than any radio, will inevitably damage it.

With their complex structures, the Cambrian Period life forms we shall be looking at in this chapter expose the invalidity of the claims of evolution and show that these life forms were created.

According to evolutionary claims, the Cambrian Period is very early for the high level of biological complexity it exhibits. Darwinists claim that the complex structures possessed by living things are acquired gradually, over long periods of time. Therefore, species must have possessed rudimentary, primitive characteristics at the start of their supposed evolutionary histories and acquired more complex features only at the end of a very lengthy evolutionary process.

In fact, however, the history of life presents the exact opposite picture. The first creatures shared the same basic body structures as those living today; and the same complex organs such as eyes, antennae, limbs, mouths and guts. Therefore, complexity is a characteristic that came in the first moment in the history of life, rather than late. It has been in existence since they first appeared. This, no doubt, is a great impasse for evolutionists. The evolutionist researchers Marshall Kay and Edwin H. Colbert state that this state of affairs is an insoluble dilemma for Darwinists:

"The introduction of a variety of organisms in the early Cambrian, including such complex forms of the arthropods as the trilobites, is surprising . . . The introduction of abundant organisms in the record would not be so surprising if they were simple. Why should such complex organic forms be in rocks about 600 million years old and be absent or unrecognized in the records of the preceding two billion years? . . . If there has been evolution of life, the absence of the requisite fossils in the rocks older than the Cambrian is puzzling."11

By hiding behind the concept of a puzzle, these evolutionist researchers are trying to gloss over the fact that all these complex systems emerged suddenly, hundreds of millions of years ago—a fact that by itself is enough to completely repudiate Darwinism. To show why this early complexity has such a devastating effect on Darwinism, it will be useful to examine the trilobite and the perfect and highly sophisticated structure of its eye.

Richard Fortey, an evolutionist paleontologist from London’s Natural History Museum, comments on the great number of lenses in some trilobite eyes:
