THE BLUE WINDOW

As I met Sixy at his gate, his mum’s voice blasted from the house. And don’t do anything stupid!

I asked, What was that about?

She’s sent me to post an urgent letter. I’ve to take it down to the post office.

You’ve just about enough intelligence for that. If you don’t start playing detective.

What do you mean – ‘playing’? Detective work is no game. It’s a serious business. It….

I sighed. It was my own fault. I shouldn’t’ve started him talking about his detective work. He talked all the way down Station Road and along King Street. He was still talking in Albert Street when he stopped and grabbed my arm. He looked all around, then complained, Police! They’re never around when you need them.

He dashed across the road in front of a white van. The driver leaned out the window and shouted, but Sixy never noticed. He was running along the other pavement, back the way we’d come. I crossed the road (more carefully) and ran after him.

He was slinking along beside the walls of the houses, bumping into the people who didn’t see him. I said, Give it up, Sixy.

Shush, BB!

He was playing detective. That meant trouble. I wanted to run in the other direction. But what are mates for?

We went back along Albert Street and into King Street. It wasn’t so busy, so Sixy started what he calls ‘invisible shadowing’ – creeping sideways along the back of the pavement.

I kept walking, acting casual. As I passed Sixy, he whispered, BB, keep out of sight. I strolled on, pretending I hadn’t heard.

I couldn’t work out who Sixy was following until we started up Station Road. Then, the only pedestrian ahead of us was a guy in a grey fleece.

Near the top of the road, he stopped and slapped his pocket. He turned and seemed to look straight at us. Sixy gasped but went on with his invisible shadowing. I kept walking, starting to worry. Was the guy going to complain about us following him?

Just before we reached him, he called, Boys! Come here.

My worry went up a notch.

He went on, Would you do me a favour? He was mainly speaking to Sixy. With his round face and Harry Potter specs, Sixy looks sensible.

Sixy scowled at him. Yes?

The guy took a letter from his pocket. Would you deliver this note for me? Albert Street. Number 24. The door has no letter box, so you have to use the window. The blue window. Lift it and slip this note on the sill inside. Would you do that?
