In the midst of it all, the world economy fell to pieces. When the dust settled, no one had a plan, not even the most brilliant economists and academics.

    Our story opens in the present, with a Grandmother and her Granddaughter, Emily, discussing “money”. An item Emily is totally unfamiliar with. As Grandmother’s story expands we are introduced to a little book written by Emily’s Great Grandfather, Mr. Charles.

    I believe in the common man and woman and look to them for our common future. I am a philosopher and an author. I am also a mother and grandmother. I spent twenty years in the fields of print and electronic media. That being said, my story is far from simple. I have held at least 15 different jobs and lived in too many places to count. In the mid 80s I traveled to Hamburg and Geneva to collect video footage in pursuit of the now defunct Super Conducting Super Collider. In 2002 I was off to Okinawa, Japan, in pursuit of radon gas on military bases. I have worked in both the public and private sectors and have come to respect all who labor to make our world work.I was born in the Illinois heartland when its wheels were oiled by factories, farmers and coal miners. In my middle years I moved to Colorado--a long-cherished dream from my childhood. I now live in Indiana near my family, children and grandchildren. I began writing seriously in 1979 and have never stopped. I have completed several novels, short stories and poems. In 2016, at a colleague's suggestion, I set my mind to eBook publishing through Smashwords distributors. I look forward to the next chapter of my life's journey!

      DEAR READERS,

      When I started writing this book in 2008, there was no Covid-19. No stay-at-home orders. Face masks were in abundance. PPE was not part of our vocabulary. But then again, that is not to say all was right with the world.

      We were on the cusp of a great recession. Another economic fall from grace. George Bush left office and Barack Obama took his place. Millions became unemployed. Over the next decade we regained our footing, but not without sacrifice. Prices rose exponentially on those things we needed most. Successive bailouts rifled the pocketbooks of the middle class who had few places to hide their money while our government raised the debt limit every six months or so until we sank into the pit of trillions of minuses.

      Covid-19 was preceded by 911, terrorism and mass shootings. No part of the world was spared. Wars in the Middle East forced millions to flee. Merciless ethnic cleansing and displacement cost innocent lives by the tens of thousands. Pleas for rescue and mercy abounded. Whole nations became outcast; their people labeled dangerous and toxic.

      I wrote this book as a way to put down in words what I witnessed in pictures. In people’s faces. In the photos of those who had died at the hands of a gun, a knife, a bomb, a fist or a hateful word; and in recognition of the vast majority of the world’s people who go to bed hungry each night. I asked myself if humans were capable of turning a corner. Of seeing another way and then choosing to take it.

      Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but since 911 people have been dying to get our attention. Begging us to step back and ask why such events still occur in a world that says it wants peace, and an end to poverty, bigotry and hopelessness.

      This book is about the road not yet taken. A journey that can be realized only by the conscious choice of each person. Covid-19 is an opportunity. Through pain and sacrifice it has magnified the humanity of Humanity. But charity
