      Chapter 1

      Storm clouds rolled above Kiana's head as she paused for a moment and exhaled. She turned upwards in frustration. You couldn't wait until I found the deer? She landed a clear shot with her new bow and wanted to fell the creature. It looked large enough to feed her family for a few days, and considering her father lost his job earlier, they needed any help they could get.

      She returned her attention to the ground, inspecting the hoofprints in the mud. She was close. The creature was struggling with moving. She continued further.

      A few drops of rain fell upon her head, and she looked up. A drop hit her on the cheek. The storm rolled in faster than she expected. She turned to the side, trying to find somewhere she could hide out until it finished. It shouldn't last for much longer.

      Walking toward a known hunting blind she could rest in for a moment, she saw a set of prints on the ground she hadn't noticed before. She knelt, her hand inspecting it. It was larger than her hand. There was only one creature that made these sorts of prints.

      A low howl sounded in the distance and she looked over her shoulder with fear in her eyes. That wasn't a wolf. She knew that sound. This was deeper, louder. The prints made sense now.

      Werewolf.

      She started running in the opposite direction, hoping to make it to another home giving her refuge until the storm passed. Rain started dropping upon her as her feet started getting stuck into the mud of the well-worn path.

      She halted when she saw a figure standing in front of her on the trail. It seemed like a large man, his body rising higher than any other she had seen in the village. In the darkness of the clouds, she saw his furred body rippling with anger. She took a step back, fearing what might happen. Her hand dropped to her side, pressing against her knife.

      Another man appeared at her left side, seeming nearly as tall and as broad as the one in front of her. His fur was sooty and his yellowed eyes burn into hers. I don't want any trouble, she said as she looked from one to the other. Let me pass.

      The wolf who stood in front of her walked closer towards her. His lumbering body grew larger with each step and she caught herself hypnotized by his eyes. He stopped only a few feet from her, close enough for her to make out the sharpened fangs he bore. You know these woods are ours, he said with a low rumble in his voice, the thunder accentuating it as it rolled through. Anyone or anything found in it belongs to us.

      She nodded. I was only passing through. I meant no harm. It won;t happen again.

      You should've thought of that before you arrived. Lightning flashed and his bright eyes caught the light. It seemed to cast a hypnotic spell upon her. She couldn't move. He moved in closer and brought his claw under her chin, rising her face towards his. Someone like you will make a pleasant addition to my pack.

      His hand slid down her side, grabbing onto her arm. Her steps followed his as she tried fighting against his gaze. She shook her head. Everything was fuzzy, but she needed to find clarity. Let me go, she pleaded.

      You've seen us. You know who we are. You have no options.

      I won't tell anyone you're here. She struggled once more. His fingers cut grooves into her skin. The pain caused her to focus on her arm. It seemed to work in bringing her some lucidity, although it still didn't give her the option to run.

      You already know too much. He kept dragging her, bringing her into the darkness.

      She wasn't going with him. There was too much at stake. He'd kill her. She reached at her side, bringing out a small knife her father instructed her to carry while traveling. The blade struck into the arm of the werewolf. Dark crimson blood dribbled out, coating his fur almost immediately. He howled.

      Her hand yanked back, bringing the blade out as her grip tightened on it. This was her only chance of using something to escape, and she needed to take any chance available. She ran off in the opposite direction, her feet jumping over the raised roots from the trees.

      She brushed her chestnut hair from her face as she struggled to keep herself from running face first into one tree around her. She staggered, her balance off momentarily, as her face hit against something solid and rough. She looked up and saw the wolf from earlier glaring at her with hatred.

      Blood matted his arm. You shouldn't have done that.

      Without pause, she raised her knife and jabbed it into his chest. As compared to his arm, the blood didn't move out as quickly. It remained in place and as she tried yanking it out, his hand grabbed onto hers. He howled in her face. Spittle flew towards her eyes and her head pushed back.

      His opposite hand grabbed onto her neck, lifting her into the air. I'll finish you right now. His jaw opened wide, teeth jagged, and he bit into her arm.

      She cried out in pain. It felt as if her body was going into shock. Everything around her was flashing brilliant colors as she struggled to keep her composure. This was how she died. No one knew she was out here and no one knew to save her.

      He lowered his arm but kept a firm grip on her. She was losing blood quickly and she felt her body draining. Her feet kicked against the creature, but she knew it was useless. It didn't seem to faze the
